Verses 1-8 describe life on a new earth after the old earth has passed away. No sin will ever come into this new earth. Everything will always be good. There won’t be any sea to separate people; everyone will be together. God will come down from heaven to be with the people who are on the new earth. God always wanted to be with people. God will say, “It is done.” The old, sad, sinful world will be gone and God will make all things new. The eternal earth will have no sin, death, sorrow, crying or pain. God will wipe away all tears. The water of life on the new earth is not for salvation. The water fountain of life shows that Christ will always satisfy us. We will enjoy Christ and His love more and more. While believers will be happy with Christ on the new earth, the people who rejected Jesus will exist and suffer for eternity in the lake of fire.
At verse 9 the chapter goes back to the time of the Millennium. The church, the bride of Christ, is the holy, heavenly city, New Jerusalem. The beautiful city is representing us, the bride, reflecting the glory of Christ to the world during the Millennium. The kings of all nations will be required to bring their glory and honor to it. No sin or anything to defile will ever enter into the holy city. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life may enter in.
