Rewards for the Christian are spoken of frequently in the New Testament. They are open to all. A cup of cold water, given to a little one because he belongs to Christ, shall not lose its reward (
Mark 9:41
41
For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. (Mark 9:41)
). The Lord Jesus said, “Behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be” (
Rev. 22:12
12
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. (Revelation 22:12)
). He who labors in the Lord’s service, if his work abides, will receive his reward (1 Cor. 3:8,14). At the same time, the Lord will reward the doer of evil with its fitting recompense (2 Sam. 3:39).
Rewards are not held out as a motive before the soul; each should be able to say,
The love of Christ constrains me
(2 Cor. 5:14). But they are added, in the abundance of love and grace, as an encouragement amid the dangers and difficulties of the way. Believers are warned that they be not beguiled of their reward (
Col. 2:18
18
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, (Colossians 2:18)
;
Rev. 3:11
11
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. (Revelation 3:11)
).
There’s one eternal reward we should all be looking forward to: “Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord” (
Matt. 25:21
21
His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. (Matthew 25:21)
).
