Scorning and Mocking.

The sufferings of Christ by, predicted. Psa. 22:6-8⁶But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. ⁷All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, ⁸He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. (Psalm 22:6‑8). Isa. 53:3³He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (Isaiah 53:3). Luke 18:32³²For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: (Luke 18:32).

Christ endured. Matt. 9:24²⁴He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. (Matthew 9:24). Matt. 27:29²⁹And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! (Matthew 27:29).

SAINTS ENDURE, ON ACCOUNT OF

Being children of God. Gen. 21:9⁹And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. (Genesis 21:9), with Gal. 4:29²⁹But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. (Galatians 4:29).

Their uprightness. Job 12:4⁴I am as one mocked of his neighbor, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn. (Job 12:4). Their faith. Heb. 11:36³⁶And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: (Hebrews 11:36).

Their faithfulness in declaring the word of God. Jer. 20:7, 8⁷O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me. ⁸For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the Lord was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily. (Jeremiah 20:7‑8).

Their zeal for God's house. Neh. 2:19¹⁹But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king? (Nehemiah 2:19).

THE WICKED INDULGE IN, AGAINST

The second coming of Christ. 2 Peter 3:3,4³Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, ⁴And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. (2 Peter 3:3‑4).

The gifts of the Spirit. Acts 2:13¹³Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. (Acts 2:13).

God's threatenings. Isa. 5:19¹⁹That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it! (Isaiah 5:19). Jer. 17:15¹⁵Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of the Lord? let it come now. (Jeremiah 17:15).

God's ministers. 2 Chr. 36:16¹⁶But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy. (2 Chronicles 36:16).

God's ordinances. Lam. 1:7⁷Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths. (Lamentations 1:7).

Saints. Psa. 123:4⁴Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud. (Psalm 123:4). Lam. 3:14, 6, 3¹⁴I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day. (Lamentations 3:14)
⁶He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old. (Lamentations 3:6)
³Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day. (Lamentations 3:3).

The resurrection of the dead. Acts 17:32³²And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. (Acts 17:32).

All solemn admonitions. 2 Chr. 30:6-10⁶So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria. ⁷And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which trespassed against the Lord God of their fathers, who therefore gave them up to desolation, as ye see. ⁸Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the Lord, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever: and serve the Lord your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you. ⁹For if ye turn again unto the Lord, your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the Lord your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him. ¹⁰So the posts passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun: but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them. (2 Chronicles 30:6‑10).

Idolaters addicted to. Isa. 57:3-6³But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the whore. ⁴Against whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood, ⁵Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks? ⁶Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these? (Isaiah 57:3‑6),

Drunkards addicted to. Psa. Hos. 7:5⁵In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. (Hosea 7:5).

THEY WHO ARE ADDICTED TO,

Delight in. Prov. 1:22²²How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? (Proverbs 1:22).

Are contentions. Prov. 22:10¹⁰Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease. (Proverbs 22:10).

Are scorned by God. Prov. 3:34³⁴Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. (Proverbs 3:34).

Are hated by men. Prov. 24:9⁹The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men. (Proverbs 24:9).

Are avoided by saints. Psa. 1:1¹Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. (Psalm 1:1). Jer. 15:17¹⁷I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation. (Jeremiah 15:17).

Walk after their own lusts. 2 Peter 3:3³Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, (2 Peter 3:3).

Are proud and haughty. Prov. 21:24²⁴Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath. (Proverbs 21:24).

Hear not rebuke. Prov. 13:1¹A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke. (Proverbs 13:1).

Love not those who reprove. Prov. 15:12¹²A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise. (Proverbs 15:12).

Hate those who reprove. Prov. 9:8⁸Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. (Proverbs 9:8).

Go not to the wise. Prov. 15:12¹²A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise. (Proverbs 15:12).

Bring others into danger. Prov. 29:8⁸Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath. (Proverbs 29:8).

Shall themselves endure. Ezek. 23:32³²Thus saith the Lord God; Thou shalt drink of thy sister's cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much. (Ezekiel 23:32).

Characteristic of the latter days. 2 Peter 3:3³Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, (2 Peter 3:3). Jude 18¹⁸How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. (Jude 18).

Woe denounced against. Isa. 5:18, 19¹⁸Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope: ¹⁹That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it! (Isaiah 5:18‑19).

Punishment for. 2 Chr. 36:17¹⁷Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand. (2 Chronicles 36:17). Prov. 19:29²⁹Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools. (Proverbs 19:29). Isa. 29:20²⁰For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off: (Isaiah 29:20). Lam. 3:64-66⁶⁴Render unto them a recompence, O Lord, according to the work of their hands. ⁶⁵Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them. ⁶⁶Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the Lord. (Lamentations 3:64‑66).

Exemplified. Ishmael, Gen. 21:9⁹And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. (Genesis 21:9). Children at Bethel, 2 Kin. 2:23. Ephraim and Manasseh, 2 Chr. 30: 10. Chiefs of Judah. 2 Chr. 36:16¹⁶But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy. (2 Chronicles 36:16). Sanballat, Neh. 4:1¹But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews. (Nehemiah 4:1). Enemies of Job, Job 30:1, 9¹But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock. (Job 30:1)
⁹And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword. (Job 30:9). Enemies of David, Psa. 35:15, 16¹⁵But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yea, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not: ¹⁶With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth. (Psalm 35:15‑16). Rulers of Israel, Isa. 28:14¹⁴Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. (Isaiah 28:14). Ammonites, Ezek. 25:3³And say unto the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord God; Thus saith the Lord God; Because thou saidst, Aha, against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity; (Ezekiel 25:3). Tyrians, Ezek. 26:2²Son of man, because that Tyrus hath said against Jerusalem, Aha, she is broken that was the gates of the people: she is turned unto me: I shall be replenished, now she is laid waste: (Ezekiel 26:2). Heathen, Ezek. 36:2, 3²Thus saith the Lord God; Because the enemy hath said against you, Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession: ³Therefore prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Because they have made you desolate, and swallowed you up on every side, that ye might be a possession unto the residue of the heathen, and ye are taken up in the lips of talkers, and are an infamy of the people: (Ezekiel 36:2‑3). Soldiers, Matt. 27:28-30²⁸And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. ²⁹And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! ³⁰And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. (Matthew 27:28‑30). Luke 23:36³⁶And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, (Luke 23:36). Chief Priests, do. Matt. 27:41⁴¹Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, (Matthew 27:41). Pharisees, Luke 16:14¹⁴And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. (Luke 16:14). The men who held Jesus, Luke 22:63, 64⁶³And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. ⁶⁴And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? (Luke 22:63‑64). Herod, &c. Luke 23:11¹¹And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. (Luke 23:11). People and rulers, Luke 23:35³⁵And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. (Luke 23:35). Some of the multitude, Acts 2:13¹³Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. (Acts 2:13). Athenians, Acts 17:32³²And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. (Acts 17:32).
