Self-Occupation

SELF-OCCUPATION is a dreary study, a lifelong pursuit to bring a clean thing out of an unclean. I am so evil, cries the student of self, and repeats himself continually. He is ever before the looking-glass, and the more he sees of himself, the longer grows his countenance. He has picked up the broken pieces of the once-beautiful ornament, and having carefully placed them under a glass shade, is ever occupied with that which cannot be mended, and mourning over the fragments. Wiser far to cast away as worthless that which cannot be restored; happier far to turn away from the looking-glass, and to behold the face of Jesus Christ. True Christian wisdom lies in Christ-occupation, in studying the glorified Jesus, and in believing God’s word “IN CHRIST.”
