The word “paraclete” signifies one who takes up the cause of another. It is translated “Comforter” in reference to the Holy Spirit (
John 14:16
16
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (John 14:16)
) and “advocate” in reference to the Lord Jesus (1
John 2:1
1
And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: (John 2:1)
). Christ in the glory is an advocate for a son of the Father if he should sin. He is the Paraclete in heaven while the Holy Spirit is the same on earth to secure the spiritual welfare of God’s children.
