The Seventh Day: Genesis 2:1-7
Genesis 2:1‑7; Exodus 20:8 • 1 min. read • grade level: 8
Gen. 2 begins with the statement that on the seventh day God ended His work, which He had made. The work of reconstruction had transformed this earth into a fair and beautiful place suitable as man's environment in every way. God was pleased to set the seventh day aside as a day of rest for man. He blessed the seventh day and sanctified it. This is the origin of the Sabbath of the Jews, to whom God afresh gave them this day of rest. The fourth commandment, among the ten written by the finger of God on Mount Sinai, was "Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy" (Ex. 20:88Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. (Exodus 20:8)).
