Waiting Upon God.

As the God of providence. Jer. 14:22²²Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things. (Jeremiah 14:22).

As the God of salvation. Psa. 25:5⁵Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. (Psalm 25:5).

As the Giver of all temporal blessings. Psa. 104:27, 28²⁷These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season. ²⁸That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good. (Psalm 104:27‑28). Psa. 145:15, 16¹⁵The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. ¹⁶Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing. (Psalm 145:15‑16).

FOR

Mercy. Psa. 123:2²Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us. (Psalm 123:2).

Pardon. Psa. 39:7, 8⁷And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee. ⁸Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish. (Psalm 39:7‑8).

The consolation of Israel. Luke 2:25²⁵And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. (Luke 2:25).

Salvation. Gen. 49:18¹⁸I have waited for thy salvation, O Lord. (Genesis 49:18). Psa. 62:1, 2¹<<To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David.>> Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation. ²He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. (Psalm 62:1‑2).

Guidance and teaching. Psa. 25:5⁵Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. (Psalm 25:5).

Protection. Psa. 33:20²⁰Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield. (Psalm 33:20). Psa. 59:9, 10⁹Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence. ¹⁰The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies. (Psalm 59:9‑10).

The fulfillment of His word. Hab. 2:3³For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. (Habakkuk 2:3).

The fulfillment of His promises. Acts 1:4⁴And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. (Acts 1:4).

Hope of righteousness by faith. Gal. 5:5⁵For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. (Galatians 5:5).

Coming of Christ. 1 Cor. 1:7⁷So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: (1 Corinthians 1:7). 1 Thess. 1:10¹⁰And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. (1 Thessalonians 1:10).

Is good. Psa. 52:9⁹I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints. (Psalm 52:9).

God calls us to. Zeph. 3:8⁸Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the Lord, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. (Zephaniah 3:8).

Exhortations and encouragements to. Psa. 27:14¹⁴Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. (Psalm 27:14). Psa. 37:7⁷Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. (Psalm 37:7). Hos. 12:6⁶Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually. (Hosea 12:6).

SHOULD BE

With the soul. Psa. 62:1, 5¹<<To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David.>> Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation. (Psalm 62:1)
⁵My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. (Psalm 62:5).

With earnest desire. Psa. 130:6⁶My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. (Psalm 130:6).

With patience. Psa. 37:7⁷Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. (Psalm 37:7). Psa. 40:1¹<<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. (Psalm 40:1)

With resignation. Lam. 3:26²⁶It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord. (Lamentations 3:26).

With hope in His word. Psa. 130:5⁵I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. (Psalm 130:5).

With full confidence. Mic. 7:7⁷Therefore I will look unto the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. (Micah 7:7).

Continually. Hos. 12:6⁶Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually. (Hosea 12:6).

All the day. Psa. 25:5⁵Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. (Psalm 25:5).

Specially in adversity. Psa. 59:19. Isa. 8:17¹⁷And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. (Isaiah 8:17).

In the way of His judgments. Isa. 26:8⁸Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. (Isaiah 26:8).

Saints resolve on. Psa. 52:9⁹I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints. (Psalm 52:9). Psa. 59:9⁹Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence. (Psalm 59:9).

Saints have expectation from. Psa. 62:5⁵My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. (Psalm 62:5).

Saints plead, in prayer. Psa. 25:21²¹Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee. (Psalm 25:21). Isa. 33:2²O Lord, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble. (Isaiah 33:2).

The patience of saints often tried in. Psa. 69:3³I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God. (Psalm 69:3).

THEY WHO ENGAGE IN,

Wait upon Him only. Psa. 62:5⁵My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. (Psalm 62:5). Are heard. Psa. 40:1¹<<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. (Psalm 40:1).

Are blessed. Isa. 30:18¹⁸And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him. (Isaiah 30:18). Dan. 12:12¹²Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. (Daniel 12:12).

Experience His goodness. Lam. 3:25²⁵The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. (Lamentations 3:25).

Shall not be ashamed. Psa. 25:3³Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause. (Psalm 25:3). Isa. 49:23²³And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me. (Isaiah 49:23).

Shall renew their strength, &c. Isa. 40:31³¹But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31).

Shall inherit the earth. Psa. 37:9⁹For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. (Psalm 37:9).

Shall be saved. Prov. 20:22²²Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee. (Proverbs 20:22). Isa. 25:9⁹And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation. (Isaiah 25:9).

Shall rejoice in salvation. Isa. 25:9⁹And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation. (Isaiah 25:9).

Shall receive the glorious things prepared by God for them. Isa. 64:4⁴For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him. (Isaiah 64:4).

Predicted of the Gentiles. Isa. 42:4⁴He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. (Isaiah 42:4). Isa. 60:9⁹Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the Lord thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee. (Isaiah 60:9).

Illustrated. (Psalm 123:2). Luke 12:36³⁶And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. (Luke 12:36). James 5:7⁷Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. (James 5:7).

Exemplified. Jacob, Gen. 49:18¹⁸I have waited for thy salvation, O Lord. (Genesis 49:18). Hannah, 1 Sam. 1:2. David, Psa. 39:7⁷And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee. (Psalm 39:7). Isaiah, Isa. 8:17¹⁷And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. (Isaiah 8:17).
