What the Christian Is to Be and to Do

He is not to be conformed to this world (Rom. 12:2²And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2)), of whom Satan is the god (2 Cor. 4:4⁴In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. (2 Corinthians 4:4)) and Prince (John 12:31³¹Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. (John 12:31)), but to keep himself unspotted from it (James 1:27²⁷Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27)), because its friendship is enmity with God, so that if he will be “A friend of the world,” he “Is an enemy of God” (James 4:4⁴Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (James 4:4)).

He is, therefore, not to love it, nor any of the things that are in it (1 John 2:15¹⁵Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15)), all of which are comprised in “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life,” and which are emphatically “not of the Father” (1 John 2:16¹⁶For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (1 John 2:16)).

He is to beware, therefore, of following the example of Demas, who forsook the right way, having loved this present world (2 Tim. 4:10¹⁰For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. (2 Timothy 4:10)), but is as a stranger and pilgrim (1 Peter 2:11¹¹Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; (1 Peter 2:11)) to expect tribulation in it, but to be of good cheer, for Christ has overcome it (John 16:33³³These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)).

Such is the Christian course, as laid down in the Chart of God’s Word.

Shall we not seek to be more true to Him “until He comes”?
