181. When Satan Appears

When Satan appears

To stop up our path,

And fill us with fears,

We triumph by faith;

He cannot take from us,

Though oft he has tried,

The heart-cheering promise,

The Lord will provide.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
“And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.” (Genesis 22:8)
“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.” (Genesis 22:14)

He tells us we’re weak,

Our hope is in vain,

The good that we seek

We ne’er shall obtain;

But when such suggestions

Our spirits have tried,

This answers all questions,

The Lord will provide.
“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:14)

No strength of our own,

Or goodness we claim;

Yet since we have known

The Savior’s great name,

In this, our strong tower,

For safety we hide,

The Lord is our power,

The Lord will provide.
“I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength.” (Psalm 88:4)
“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” (Romans 5:6)
“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.” (Romans 7:18)
“For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.” (Psalm 61:3)
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Should life sink apace,

And death be in view,

This word of His grace

Shall comfort us through;

No fearing or doubting,

With Christ on our side,

Through faith we’ll die shouting,

The Lord will provide.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4)
“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
“When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.” (Psalm 56:9)
