Have you ever slept outside? Perhaps as you were lying on your back in a sleeping bag, you noticed as the stars were beginning to appear. There were just a few at first, but more and more soon appeared until the sky seemed full of stars — some twinkling, others colorful, but all beautiful.
After a short while you perhaps realized that a group of stars you had especially noticed were no longer where they first were, but were now twinkling through some nearby trees. Other stars had taken their place. You may have realized this was due to two things — the earth was turning about 1000 miles an hour, and the stars themselves were traveling at a similar or even greater speed. But you knew that tomorrow night they would be there again.
An experience like that is something amazing. David, out in the fields with his sheep, had the same experience and later wrote in Psalm 8:3-4,3When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 4What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? (Psalm 8:3‑4) “When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained; what is man?”
It must be that everyone in the world at some time wonders about those billions and billions of stars — where they came from, how they always have their own place in space, or why they never crash into one another. God wants everyone to recognize that He alone brought them into being and keeps them in their places.
Astronomers have the opportunity to look at the stars with huge telescopes and see much more of their beauty than the rest of us can see. They now think there are 100 to 200 billion galaxies! They have given names to some stars, but of course they could never find enough names for the billions more that there are. However, the Creator knows exactly how many there are and has given a name to every single star. Psalm 147:44He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. (Psalm 147:4) says, “He [counts] the number of the stars; He [calls] them all by their names.” Isn’t that wonderful?
God’s ability to name every star, that people can never begin to count, shows us a bit of how much He knows. And He knows you just as well! He knows your name and just what you are thinking at every moment, as well as what your life is like in every detail. He has promised, “I will never leave [you]” (Hebrews 13:55Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5)). Because He loves us and cares about us so much, we can trust Him completely!
Did You Know?
Earth spins at 1000 miles an hour at the equator.
