The people and priests in their panic before the Philistines brought out the ark of God, if peradventure it might serve as a charm against the swords of their enemies; but here David refuses to employ it selfishly and irreverently, whatever his need and peril—a man, if ever there was one of old on earth, with living faith in God, and real reverence for the sign of His presence in Israel.  Zadok and Abiathar are not wrong in esteeming that the ark ought to be with the king; they have a general understanding of God's mind but take His ways with David less into account. David himself teaches them this by sending them back. (Friends and Enemies: 2 Samuel 16 by H.L. Rossier)
