We cannot agree with our correspondent “Questionist,” in his view of
2 Corinthians 5:17
17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
. It holds good, without any exception, that “if any man,” young or old, “be in Christ, he is a new creation;” and “if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His” (Rom. 8). But, then, we are not taught to look at the fruits of the new creation, as the ground of our peace, in the presence of God; but at the all-sufficient atonement of Christ. This is the true ground of peace.
It is deeply important to remember that God begins with us as “dead.” This would put an end to a host of doubts and questions. “You hath He quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins” (
Eph. 2:1
1
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; (Ephesians 2:1)
). God visits the sinner where he is, and as he is. He
reveals
eternal life and divine righteousness, in the person of Christ. The soul that receives Christ is “a new creation,” and in that new creation,
“all things
are of God.” There is not so much as a shred of the creature in that divine creation. We are there only as recipients and worshippers. May the Lord grant us a fuller understanding of the precious mysteries of this “new creation.”
