646. Grass for Fuel

Matthew 6:30³⁰Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? (Matthew 6:30). The grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven.

See also Luke 12:29²⁹And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. (Luke 12:29).

So great is the scarcity of fuel that even dried grass and withered flowers are used for making a fire. They are carefully gathered and carried in bundles, sometimes in the arms, and sometimes loaded on donkeys. See also note on 1 Kings 17:10¹⁰So he arose and went to Zarephath.
