In building the better class of houses it is usual to dig down until the solid rock is reached, in order to have a sure foundation for the edifice. Dr. Robinson says of a new house he visited in Nazareth, by invitation of its owner, “In order to lay the foundations he had dug down to the solid rock, as is usual throughout the country; here to the depth of thirty feet; and then built up arches” (Biblical Researches, vol. 2, p. 338). It was of such a house that the Saviour spoke in the text: the builder “digged deep.”
