I was in a town in the north of Scotland a good many years ago, where they sang nothing but the Psalms. They had a church that held the whole town of about two thousand five hundred people, and I think I never heard the 23rd Psalm sung as they sang it — “The Lord’s my shepherd.” It was grand singing. When I finished preaching, I said, “I never heard the 23rd Psalm sung so well, and I wonder how many sang it from the heart. I should like to have all who can sing it from the heart rise and sing it again.”
I never heard it sung so poorly. I do not think there were fifty people on their feet. It is one thing to sing, “The Lord is my shepherd,” and it is another thing to believe it. Is the Lord really your shepherd?
