Do you enjoy fresh, homemade bread? Children, and adults too, usually do! The children who attended this grade school in the village of Oxfordshire, England, about 60 years ago, were very fortunate. Every morning, a wonderful baker named Mr. Alex Cameron baked many loaves of bread and dozens of rolls, and then he delivered them to this school. The children loved the fresh bread and fancy rolls Mr. Cameron always brought them promptly at 8:00 a.m. every school day for morning snack. He also left plenty of bread for wonderful sandwiches for lunch.
One Monday morning, in spring, the children were looking forward to the warm bread as usual. But when Mr. Cameron hadn’t shown up by 8:15 a.m., they knew something must be wrong, and they were very concerned about him. He had always been on time. The school janitor offered to go out and look for Mr. Cameron. Perhaps his truck had broken down somewhere and he needed help. The janitor returned by 8:45. He had not found Mr. Cameron. There were few phones in this small village back then, so they could not call him.
When he had still not arrived by 9:00, the school principal decided to go to Mr. Cameron’s house. He saw that Mr. Cameron’s truck was still in his driveway. He found the house key under the door mat, and after knocking a number of times without getting an answer, he used the key to enter the house. There he was shocked to find Mr. Cameron sprawled out on the floor. His eyes were open, and he was looking up at him, but Mr. Cameron was unable to move. The principal quickly found two neighbors, and they carried Mr. Cameron to the car and took him to the nearby hospital. Dear Mr. Cameron knew the Lord Jesus. He had prayed that the Lord would send help as he lay helpless on the floor. And the Lord did!
The doctor told the principal that Mr. Cameron had experienced a stroke — an illness that can take all your strength away and leave you unable to do anything for yourself until you recover. The doctor and nurses took very good care of kind Mr. Cameron. And the doctor said that if he had not been found, he would have died within an hour. Isn’t it good that the principal was on time that day?
Children, you may feel very young and healthy and death may seem very far away. But just as Mr. Cameron didn’t expect to have a stroke that day, we never know when something will happen that could take away our health or even our life. It’s so important to be ready for that. Mr. Cameron was found because the principal cared enough about him to go looking for him. And the Lord Jesus cared enough about you to come to earth to look for you, since you were a sinner, far from God. “The Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:1010For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. (Luke 19:10)). The Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross and shed His blood to pay for your sins. He came to seek for you! If you believe on what He has done, the Lord Jesus will come into your heart and put His love in your heart. It fills His heart with rejoicing when anyone comes to Him! But sadly, those who refuse to listen to the message of salvation, of believing on the Lord Jesus Christ and what He did to wash away our sins, will not go to heaven, but to hell. God doesn’t want to send anyone to that terrible place.
Amazingly, Mr. Cameron was soon able to go back to work part time, making and delivering his delicious bread. This dear man, who had prayed that the Lord would send help when he had his stroke, had an almost miraculous answer to his prayer. The Lord not only sent help, but He also eventually healed him! Mr. Cameron gave the Lord all the glory for this wonderful answer to prayer.
Having Mr. Cameron back and working made the children of the village very happy. It made him happy too. He enjoyed serving them! And the Lord Jesus loves you even more than you can understand, and He promises to take care of you if He is your Savior. I hope you trust Him for all your needs, as well as
your salvation!
