Besides the ordinary use of the word in its literal sense, it is applied to cousins and nephews (Gen. 14:14¹⁴And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan. (Genesis 14:14); Lev. 10:4⁴And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp. (Leviticus 10:4)); and to kinsmen generally (Ex. 2:11¹¹And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. Luke 10:29²⁹But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor? (Luke 10:29). He, willing to Justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?

The Jews gave a very narrow definition of the word “neighbor.” The robbing interpreted it to mean only those who were of the Jewish people. The Gentiles were not considered neighbors.
