This was curdled milk (Gen. 18:8⁸And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat. (Genesis 18:8); Deut. 32:14¹⁴Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape. (Deuteronomy 32:14)). Jael brought Sisera “butter” to drink (Judg. 5:25²⁵He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish. (Judges 5:25)); and Job 29:6⁶When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil; (Job 29:6) speaks of his steps being washed with butter when the Almighty was with him in prosperity. The promised land was to flow with milk and honey (compare Job 20:17¹⁷He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter. (Job 20:17)). Curdled milk is a common beverage in the East, and when mixed with honey is very agreeable.
