Carriages for traveling, &c. Gen. 46:29²⁹And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. (Genesis 46:29).

Carriages used in war. 1 Kings 20:25²⁵And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so. (1 Kings 20:25).

Wheels of, described. 1 Kings 7:33³³And the work of the wheels was like the work of a chariot wheel: their axletrees, and their naves, and their felloes, and their spokes, were all molten. (1 Kings 7:33).

FOR WAR

Armed with iron. Jos. 17:16¹⁶And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel. (Joshua 17:16). Jud. 1:19¹⁹These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. (Jude 19).

Lighted by night with torches. Nah. 2:3³The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken. (Nahum 2:3).

Commanded by captains. Exo. 14: 7. 1 Kings 16:9⁹And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah. (1 Kings 16:9).

Advantageously maneuvered in a flat country. Jud. 1:19¹⁹These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. (Exodus 14:9). 2 Sam. 1:6⁶And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. Kept in chariot cities. 1 Kin. 9:19. 1 Kings 10:26²⁶And Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he bestowed in the cities for chariots, and with the king at Jerusalem. (1 Kings 10:26).

Egyptians. Exo. 14:7⁷And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them. (Exodus 14:7). 2 Kin. 18:

(2 Samuel 10:18). 1 Kings 20:1¹And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it. (1 Kings 20:1).

Assyrians. 2 Kings 19:23²³By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel. (2 Kings 19:23).

Ethiopians. 2 Chr. 14:9⁹And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah. (2 Chronicles 14:9). 2 Chr. 16:8⁸Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge host, with very many chariots and horsemen? yet, because thou didst rely on the Lord, he delivered them into thine hand. (2 Chronicles 16:8).

Babylonians. Eze. 23:24²⁴And they shall come against thee with chariots, wagons, and wheels, and with an assembly of people, which shall set against thee buckler and shield and helmet round about: and I will set judgment before them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments. (Ezekiel 23:24). Eze. 26: 7.

Jews. 2 Kings 8:21²¹So Joram went over to Zair, and all the chariots with him: and he rose by night, and smote the Edomites which compassed him about, and the captains of the chariots: and the people fled into their tents. (2 Kings 8:21). 2 Kings 10:2²Now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your master's sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, a fenced city also, and armor; (2 Kings 10:2).

Kings rode in, to battle. 1 Kings 22:35³⁵And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his chariot against the Syrians, and died at even: and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst of the chariot. (1 Kings 22:35).

Kings used, in common. 1 Kings 12:18¹⁸Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. (1 Kings 12:18). 1 Kings 18:44⁴⁴And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. (1 Kings 18:44).

Persons of distinction used. Gen. 41:43⁴³And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. (Genesis 41:43). 2 Kin. 5:9, 21. Jer. 17:25²⁵Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall remain for ever. (Jeremiah 17:25). Acts 8:28²⁸Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. (Acts 8:28).

Often attended by running footmen. 1 Sam. 8:11¹¹And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. (1 Samuel 8:11). 2 Sam. 15:1¹And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. (2 Samuel 15:1). 1 Kings. 1:5.

Consecrated to the sun. 2 Kings 23:11¹¹And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entering in of the house of the Lord, by the chamber of Nathan-melech the chamberlain, which was in the suburbs, and burned the chariots of the sun with fire. (2 Kings 23:11).

THE JEWS CONDEMNED FOR

Multiplying. Isa. 2:7⁷Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots: (Isaiah 2:7).

Trusting to. Isa. 22:18¹⁸He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball into a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord's house. (Isaiah 22:18). Isa. 31:1¹Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the Lord! (Isaiah 31:1)

Taken in war, often destroyed. Jos. 11:6, 9. Jer. 51:21²¹And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider; (Jeremiah 51:21). Mic. 5:10¹⁰And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots: (Micah 5:10). Nah. 2:13¹³Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard. (Nahum 2:13).

ILLUSTRATIVE OF

The clouds. Psa. 104:3³Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: (Psalm 104:3).

The judgments of God. Isa. 66:4⁴I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. (Isaiah 66:4)

Angels. 2 Kings 6:16, 17¹⁶And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. ¹⁷And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. (2 Kings 2:12). 2 Kings 13:14¹⁴Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died. And Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over his face, and said, O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. (2 Kings 13:14).
