We set out to place their teaching alongside that of the Scriptures, and we have found a wide divergence between the two. We set out to see if the TEACHING of Scripture and the FACTS of this movement agree, and we have found most emphatically that they do not. On these counts we are bound to come to the conclusion that their claim to a special infilling of the Spirit of God is false. If so, what spirit is at work? The answer is most serious.
They may ask, Have we not prophesied in the name of the Lord? Have we not cast out devils? Have we not done many wonderful works in the name of the Lord?
We would reply, in the words of the Lord Himself, " Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven. Many will say unto Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and in Thy name have done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity" (Matt. 7:21-2321Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (Matthew 7:21‑23)).
We are assured that there will be an aftermath of confusion and sorrow wherever this pretension gets a foothold. We know personally earnest, devoted Christians, who have been caught by it. May they he delivered. Painful as the writing of this exposure has been, we shall be well repaid if it opens the eyes of any and is used to their deliverance, or if it warns those, who are likely to be attracted by it, and acts as a deterrent.
We are assured that many are deceived by it, and sincerely believe that the work is of the Spirit of God. Such may pity us in our belief that the movement is not of the Spirit of God. The matter is simple. Put it to the following four tests:-
(1) Are its teachings those of the Scriptures?
(2) Are its FACTS in consonance with the TEACHING of Scripture?
Let a few Christians of repute, among them Christian doctors of standing, examine into the supposed cases of healing twelve months alter it is claimed they have been performed.
Let a few Christian linguists examine into the Tongues Movement.
Will the believers in this system be ready to take up this challenge?
But we have seen that the answers to Nos. 1 and 2 are in the negative, and that in a very pronounced fashion, that the claims to healing have been exposed as fraudulent again and again, and that the Tongues are mainly gibberish. What conclusions can we then come to?
We could have given much more testimony as to all this. There was no lack of material, but we had to keep the pamphlet within bounds as to size.
There are undoubtedly many true Christian Pentecostalists, who preach the forgiveness of sins through the atoning work of our Lord Jesus Christ, but who go too far in pressing that every believer should be marked by speaking with tongues. May what has been written be a help and a blessing to such.
May God graciously bless this effort to help His people at this time.
