Despised or Believed?

Many years ago, just before World War I, there was a Christian man who travelled around to distribute Bibles. One day he gave a Bible to a family as a gift. The father accepted it but immediately ripped some pages out of the Bible and used them to light his pipe. The Christian went away sad at this abuse of the precious Word of God.
However, a few years later, he again came to that area and visited the same house. During the war, this family had lost a son, and his few belongings had just arrived at the house. Among his belongings was a Bible. The Christian picked it up and noticed that it was the very one he had once given to the family from which the pages had been ripped out.
The son who had died in the war had written something in the back of the Bible. This is what it said: “Despised and scoffed at but finally believed. Through it I was saved.”
Boys and girls, perhaps you have your own Bible. Do you believe it or do you despise it? If you believe it, do you read it so you can get to know God better through it? It is the greatest treasure you will ever hold in your hands on this earth! David, in the Psalms, says that what God has in His Word is more wonderful than great riches and “sweeter than honey.” (See Psalm 19:1010More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. (Psalm 19:10).)
