Often sent as punishment. Deut. 28:21²¹The Lord shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it. (Deuteronomy 28:21). John 5:14¹⁴Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. (John 5:14).

Often brought from other countries. Deut. 7:15¹⁵And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee. (Deuteronomy 7:15).

Often through Satan. 1 Sam. 16:14-16¹⁴But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him. ¹⁵And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. ¹⁶Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. (1 Samuel 16:14‑16). Job 2:7⁷So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. (Job 2:7).

Regarded as visitations. ⁷For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. (Psalm 38:7).

Intemperance a cause of. Hos. 7:5⁵In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. (Hosea 7:5).

Sins of youth a cause of. Job 20:11¹¹His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust. (Job 20:11).

Over-excitement a cause of. Dan. 8:27²⁷And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it. (Daniel 8:27).

Were many and divers. Matt. 4:24²⁴And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. (Matthew 4:24).

MENTIONED IN SCRIPTURE

Ague. Lev. 26:16¹⁶I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. (Leviticus 26:16).

Abscess. 2 Kin. 20:7.

Atrophy. Job 16:8⁸And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face. (Job 16:8). Job 19:20²⁰My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth. (Job 19:20).

Blindness. Job 29:15¹⁵I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. (Job 29:15). Matt. 9:27²⁷And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. (Matthew 9:27).

Boils and blains. Ex. 9:10¹⁰And they took ashes of the furnace, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses sprinkled it up toward heaven; and it became a boil breaking forth with blains upon man, and upon beast. (Exodus 9:10).

Consumption. Lev. 26:16¹⁶I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. (Leviticus 26:16). Deu. 28:22.

Demoniacal possession. Matt. 15:22²²And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. (Matthew 15:22). Mar. 5:15.

Deafness. Psa. 38:13¹³But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. (Psalm 38:13). Mar. 7:32.

Debility. Psa. 102:23²³He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days. (Psalm 102:23). Ezek. 7:17¹⁷All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak as water. (Ezekiel 7:17).

Dropsy. Luke 14:2²And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. (Luke 14:2).

Dumbness. Prov. 31:8⁸Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. (Proverbs 31:8). Matt. 9:32³²As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. (Matthew 9:32).

Dysentery. 2 Chr. 21:19¹⁹And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers. (2 Chronicles 21:19). Acts 28:8⁸And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him. (Acts 28:8).

Emerods. Deut. 28:27²⁷The Lord will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed. (Deuteronomy 28:27). 1 Sam. 5:6,12⁶But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof. (1 Samuel 5:6)
¹²And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven. (1 Samuel 5:12).

Fever. Deut. 28:22²²The Lord shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish. (Deuteronomy 28:22). Matt. 8:14¹⁴And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. (Matthew 8:14).

Impediment speech. Mar. 7:32.

Itch. Deut. 28:27²⁷The Lord will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed. (Deuteronomy 28:27).

Inflammation. Deut. 28:22²²The Lord shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish. (Deuteronomy 28:22).

Issue of blood. Matt. 9:20²⁰And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: (Matthew 9:20).

Lameness. 2 Sam. 4:4⁴And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. (2 Samuel 4:4). 2 Chr. 16:12¹²And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians. (2 Chronicles 16:12).

Leprosy. Lev. 13:2²When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, a scab, or bright spot, and it be in the skin of his flesh like the plague of leprosy; then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests: (Leviticus 13:2). 2 Kin. 5:1.

Loss of appetite. Job 33:20²⁰So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. (Job 33:20). Psa. 107:18¹⁸Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. (Psalm 107:18).

Lunacy. Matt. 4:24²⁴And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. (Matthew 4:24). Matt. 17:15¹⁵Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. (Matthew 17:15).

Melancholy. 1 Sam. 16:14¹⁴But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him. (1 Samuel 16:14).

Palsy. Matt. 8:6⁶And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. (Matthew 8:6). Matt. 9:2²And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. (Matthew 9:2).

Plague. Num. 11:33³³And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord smote the people with a very great plague. (Numbers 11:33). 2 Sam. 24:15, 21, 25¹⁵So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men. (2 Samuel 24:15)
²¹And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the Lord, that the plague may be stayed from the people. (2 Samuel 24:21)
²⁵And David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel. (2 Samuel 24:25).

Scab. Deut. 28:27²⁷The Lord will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed. (Deuteronomy 28:27).

Sunstroke. 2 Kin. 4:18-20. Isa. 49:10¹⁰They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. (Isaiah 49:10).

Ulcers. Isa. 1:6⁶From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. (Isaiah 1:6). Luke 16:20²⁰And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, (Luke 16:20).

Worms. Acts 12:23²³And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. (Acts 12:23).

Children subject to. 2 Sam. 12:15¹⁵And Nathan departed unto his house. And the Lord struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick. (2 Samuel 12:15). 1 Kin. 17:17.

FREQUENTLY

Loathsome. Psa. 38:7⁷For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. (Psalm 38:7). Psa. 41:8⁸An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more. (Psalm 41:8).

Painful. 2 Chr. 21:15¹⁵And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day. (2 Chronicles 21:15). Job 33:19¹⁹He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain: (Job 33:19).

Tedious. Deut. 28:59⁵⁹Then the Lord will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance. (Deuteronomy 28:59). John 5:5⁵And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. (John 5:5). Luke 13:16¹⁶And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? (Luke 13:16).

Complicated. Deut. 28:60, 61⁶⁰Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they shall cleave unto thee. ⁶¹Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the Lord bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed. (Deuteronomy 28:60‑61). Acts 28:8⁸And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him. (Acts 28:8).

Incurable. 2 Chr. 21:18¹⁸And after all this the Lord smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease. (2 Chronicles 21:18). Jer. 14:19¹⁹Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble! (Jeremiah 14:19).

Physicians undertook the cure of. Jer. 8:22²²Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered? (Jeremiah 8:22). Matt. 9:12¹²But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. (Matthew 9:12). Luke 4:23²³And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. (Luke 4:23).

Medicine used for curing. Prov. 17:22²²A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. (Proverbs 17:22). Isa. 1:6⁶From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. (Isaiah 1:6).

Art of curing, defective. Job 13:4⁴But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value. (Job 13:4). Mar. 5:26.

God often entreated to cure. 2 Sam. 12:16¹⁶David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. (2 Samuel 12:16). 2 Kin. 20:1-3. Psa. 6:2²Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. (Psalm 6:2). James 5:14¹⁴Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: (James 5:14).

Not looking to God in, condemned. 2 Chr. 16:12¹²And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians. (2 Chronicles 16:12).

THOSE AFFLICTED WITH

Anointed. Mar. 6:13. James 5:14¹⁴Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: (James 5:14).

Often laid in the streets to receive advice from passers by. Mar. 6:56. Acts 5:15¹⁵Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. (Acts 5:15).

Often divinely supported. Psa. 41:3³The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness. (Psalm 41:3).

Often divinely cured. 2 Kin. 20:5. James 5:15¹⁵And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (James 5:15).

Illustrative of sin. Isa. 1:5⁵Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. (Isaiah 1:5).
