Earth, the.

The world in general. Gen. 1:2²And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:2).

The dry land as divided from waters. Gen. 1:10¹⁰And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:10).

GOD

Created. Gen. 1:1¹In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Genesis 1:1). Neh. 9:6.

Laid the foundation of. Job 38:4⁴Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. (Job 38:4), Psa. 102:25²⁵Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. (Psalm 102:25).

Formed. Psa. 90:2²Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. (Psalm 90:2).

Spread abroad. Isa. 42:5⁵Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: (Isaiah 42:5). Isa. 44:24²⁴Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself; (Isaiah 44:24).

Suspended in space. Job 26:7⁷He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. (Job 26:7).

Supports. Psa. 75:3³The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah. (Psalm 75:3).

Establishes. Psa. 78:69⁶⁹And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever. (Psalm 78:69). Psa. 119:90⁹⁰Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. (Psalm 119:90).

Enlightens. Gen. 1:14-16¹⁴And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: ¹⁵And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. ¹⁶And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. (Genesis 1:14‑16). Jer. 33:25²⁵Thus saith the Lord; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; (Jeremiah 33:25).

Waters. Psa. 65:9⁹Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it. (Psalm 65:9). Psa. 147:8⁸Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains. (Psalm 147:8).

Makes fruitful. Gen. 1:11¹¹And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. (Genesis 1:11). Gen. 27:28²⁸Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine: (Genesis 27:28).

Inspects. Zech. 4:10¹⁰For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth. (Zechariah 4:10).

Governs supremely. Job 34:13¹³Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world? (Job 34:13). Psa. 135:6⁶Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. (Psalm 135:6).

Reigns in. Ex. 8:22²²And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the Lord in the midst of the earth. (Exodus 8:22). Psa. 97:1¹The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof. (Psalm 97:1).

Shall be exalted in. Psa. 46:10¹⁰Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10).

Is the Lord's. Ex. 9:29²⁹And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the Lord; and the thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that thou mayest know how that the earth is the Lord's. (Exodus 9:29). 1 Cor. 10. 26.

Created to be inhabited. Isa. 45:18¹⁸For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else. (Isaiah 45:18).

First division of. Gen. 10:25²⁵And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. (Genesis 10:25).

Ideas of the ancients respecting the form of. Job 11:9⁹The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. (Job 11:9). Job 38:18¹⁸Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all. (Job 38:18). Pro. 25:3³The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable. (Proverbs 25:3).

Diversified by hills and mountains. Hab. 3:6⁶He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting. (Habakkuk 3:6).

Full of minerals. Deut. 8:9⁹A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. (Deuteronomy 8:9). Job 28:1-5, 15-19¹Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it. ²Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone. ³He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death. ⁴The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men. ⁵As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire. (Job 28:1‑5)
¹⁵It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. ¹⁶It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. ¹⁷The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold. ¹⁸No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies. ¹⁹The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold. (Job 28:15‑19).

DESCRIBED AS

God's footstool. Isa. 66:1¹Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? (Isaiah 66:1). Matt. 5:35³⁵Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. (Matthew 5:35).

Full of God's goodness. Psa. 33:5⁵He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord. (Psalm 33:5).

Full of God's riches. Psa. 104:24²⁴O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. (Psalm 104:24).

Full of God's mercy. Psa. 119:64⁶⁴The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes. (Psalm 119:64).

Full of God's glory. Num. 14:21²¹But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord. (Numbers 14:21). Isa. 6:3³And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. (Isaiah 6:3).

Shining with God's glory. Ezek. 43:2²And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory. (Ezekiel 43:2).

Trembling before God. Psa. 68:8⁸The earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God: even Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel. (Psalm 68:8). Jer. 10:10¹⁰But the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. (Jeremiah 10:10).

Melting at God's voice. Psa. 46:6⁶The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. (Psalm 46:6).

Burning at God's presence. Nah. 1:5⁵The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. (Nahum 1:5):

MAN

Formed out of. Gen. 2:7⁷And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7). Psa. 103:14¹⁴For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. (Psalm 103:14).

Given dominion over. Gen. 1:26²⁶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:26). Psa. 115:16¹⁶The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord's: but the earth hath he given to the children of men. (Psalm 115:16).

By nature is of. 1 Cor. 15:47, 48⁴⁷The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. ⁴⁸As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. (1 Corinthians 15:47‑48).

By nature minds the things of. Phi. 3:19.

Brought a curse on. Gen. 3:17¹⁷And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; (Genesis 3:17).

Shall return to. Gen. 3:19¹⁹In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. (Genesis 3:19). Psa. 146:4⁴His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. (Psalm 146:4).

Subject to God's judgments. Psa. 46:8⁸Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth. (Psalm 46:8). Isa. 11:4⁴But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. (Isaiah 11:4).

Corrupted by sin. Gen. 6:11, 12¹¹The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. ¹²And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. (Genesis 6:11‑12). Isa. 24:5⁵The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. (Isaiah 24:5)

Made barren by sin. Deut. 28:23²³And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. (Deuteronomy 28:23). Psa. 107:34³⁴A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. (Psalm 107:34).

Made to mourn and languish by sin. Isa. 24:4⁴The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. (Isaiah 24:4). Jer. 4:28²⁸For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it. (Jeremiah 4:28). Jer. 12:4⁴How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end. (Jeremiah 12:4). Hos, 4:3.

Satan goes to and fro in. Job 1:7⁷And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. (Job 1:7). 1 Pet. 5:8⁸Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (1 Peter 5:8).

Shall be filled with the knowledge of God. Isa. 11:9⁹They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. (Isaiah 11:9). Hab. 2:14¹⁴For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. (Habakkuk 2:14).

Once inundated. Gen. 7:17-24¹⁷And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth. ¹⁸And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters. ¹⁹And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. ²⁰Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. ²¹And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: ²²All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. ²³And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. ²⁴And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days. (Genesis 7:17‑24).

Not to be again inundated. Gen. 9:11¹¹And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. (Genesis 9:11). 2 Pet. 3:6, 7⁶Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: ⁷But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. (2 Peter 3:6‑7).

To be dissolved by fire. 2 Peter 3:7, 10, 12⁷But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. (2 Peter 3:7)
¹⁰But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. (2 Peter 3:10)
¹²Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? (2 Peter 3:12).

To be renewed. Isa. 65:17¹⁷For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. (Isaiah 65:17). 2 Pet. 3:13¹³Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (2 Peter 3:13).

Saints shall inherit. Psa. 25:13¹³His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth. (Psalm 25:13). Matt. 5:5⁵Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5).
