spake.
his friend.
his servant.
Jehovah speaks unto Moses face to face, as a man speaks unto his friend. We shall see that it is to these communications that God alludes when He speaks of the glory of Moses (Num. 12:8), and not to those on Mount Sinai. (Exodus 33-34 by J.N. Darby)
This was a totally new thing, altogether different from the sublime communications of Sinai. It was an intimacy of approach and communion which Moses had never before enjoyed. The Lord Himself alludes to this as the distinguishing privilege of His servant, when vindicating him from the aspersions of Aaron and Miriam (Num. 12:5-8). This fact is full of consolation—teaching as it does that, though ruin, and even apostasy, may characterize the professing people of God, a way into His presence may still be found by those who can enter into His mind, and are enabled by His grace to take a place outside of the corruptions by which they are surrounded (Apostasy, Meditation and Restoration: Exodus 32-34 by E. Dennett)
The act of Moses having been accepted, he returned to the camp—now the recognized mediator; but Joshua, type of Christ in spirit, as the leader of His people, remains in the tabernacle (Apostasy, Meditation and Restoration: Exodus 32-34 by E. Dennett)
