The light of the body. Matt. 6:22²²The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. (Matthew 6:22). Luke 11:34³⁴The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. (Luke 11:34).

GOD

Made. Prov. 20:12¹²The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them. (Proverbs 20:12).

Formed. Psa. 94:9⁹He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? (Psalm 94:9).

Opens. 2 Kin. 6:17. Psa. 146:8⁸The Lord openeth the eyes of the blind: the Lord raiseth them that are bowed down: the Lord loveth the righteous: (Psalm 146:8).

Enlightens. Ezra 9:8⁸And now for a little space grace hath been showed from the Lord our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage. (Ezra 9:8). Psa. 13:3³Consider and hear me, O Lord my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; (Psalm 13:3).

Frequently fair. 1 Sam. 16:12¹²And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. (1 Samuel 16:12) (marg.)

Sometimes tender. Gen. 29:17¹⁷Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favored. (Genesis 29:17).

Sometimes blemished. Lev. 21:20²⁰Or crookbackt, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken; (Leviticus 21:20).

PARTS OF, MENTIONED IN SCRIPTURE

The apple or ball. Deut. 32:10¹⁰He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. (Deuteronomy 32:10).

The lid. Job 16:16¹⁶My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; (Job 16:16). The brow. Lev. 14:9⁹But it shall be on the seventh day, that he shall shave all his hair off his head and his beard and his eyebrows, even all his hair he shall shave off: and he shall wash his clothes, also he shall wash his flesh in water, and he shall be clean. (Leviticus 14:9).

ACTIONS OF, MENTIONED IN SCRIPTURE

Seeing. Job 7:8⁸The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not. (Job 7:8). Job 28:10¹⁰He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing. (Job 28:10).

Winking. Prov. 10:10¹⁰He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall. (Proverbs 10:10).

Weeping. Job 16:20²⁰My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God. (Job 16:20). Psa. 88:9⁹Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: Lord, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee. (Psalm 88:9). Lam. 1:16¹⁶For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed. (Lamentations 1:16).

Directing. Num. 10:31³¹And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes. (Numbers 10:31). Psa. 32:8⁸I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. (Psalm 32:8)

The light of, rejoices the heart. Prov. 15:30³⁰The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat. (Proverbs 15:30).

Not satisfied with seeing. Prov. 27:20²⁰Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied. (Proverbs 27:20). Ecc. 1:8.

Not satisfied with riches. Ecc. 4:8.

No evil thing to be set before. Psa. 101:3³I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. (Psalm 101:3).

A guard to be set on. Job 31:1¹I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? (Job 31:1). Pro. 23:31³¹Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. (Proverbs 23:31).

Made red by wine. Gen. 49:12¹²His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk. (Genesis 49:12). Prov. 23:29²⁹Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? (Proverbs 23:29).

Grows dim by sorrow. Job 17:7⁷Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, and all my members are as a shadow. (Job 17:7).

Grows dim by age. Gen. 27:1¹And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I. (Genesis 27:1). 1 Sam. 3:2²And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; (1 Samuel 3:2).

Consumed by grief. Psa. 6:7⁷Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies. (Psalm 6:7). Put. 31:9.

Consumed by sickness. Lev. 26:16¹⁶I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. (Leviticus 26:16).

THE JEWS

Wore their phylacteries between. Ex. 13:16¹⁶And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the Lord brought us forth out of Egypt. (Exodus 13:16), with Matt. 23:5⁵But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, (Matthew 23:5).

Not to make baldness between. Deut. 14:1¹Ye are the children of the Lord your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead. (Deuteronomy 14:1).

Raised up, in prayer. Psa. 121:1¹<<A Song of degrees.>> I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. (Psalm 121:1). Psa. 123:1¹<<A Song of degrees.>> Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens. (Psalm 123:1).

Cast, on the ground in humiliation. Luke 18:13¹³And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. (Luke 18:13).

The Jewish women often painted. 2 Kin. 9:30. (marg.) Jer. 4:30, (marg.) Ezek. 23:40⁴⁰And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments, (Ezekiel 23:40).

Often put out as a punishment. Jud. 16:21. 1 Sam. 11:2²And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel. (1 Samuel 11:2). 2 Kin. 25:7.

Punishment for injuring. Ex. 21:24, 26²⁴Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, (Exodus 21:24)
²⁶And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. (Exodus 21:26). Lev. 24:20²⁰Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again. (Leviticus 24:20). Matt. 5:38³⁸Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: (Matthew 5:38).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of the mind. Matt. 6:22, 23²²The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. ²³But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:22‑23).

(Open,) of spiritual illumination. Psa. 119:18, 37¹⁸Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. (Psalm 119:18)
³⁷Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. (Psalm 119:37).

(Anointing with eyesalve,) of healing by the Spirit. Rev. 3:18¹⁸I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. (Revelation 3:18).
