is always connected with prayer; the one being the expression of death to the flesh, taking away all that ministers to it, and the other the expression of dependence on God. It is needless to say the Jewish fasts have nothing to do with the Christian. At the same time Christian fasting is alluded to and even enjoined in connection with prayer (Acts 13:2, 5; 14:13²As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. (Acts 13:2)
⁵And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. (Acts 13:5)
¹³Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people. (Acts 14:13); 1 Cor. 7:5⁵Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. (1 Corinthians 7:5); 2 Cor. 6:5⁵In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in watchings, in fastings; (2 Corinthians 6:5)). There are doubtless solemn occasions of earnest prayer and confession when fasting is appropriate.
