Feasts, the Anniversary.

Instituted by God. Ex. 23:14¹⁴Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year. (Exodus 23:14).

Enumerated. Ex. 23:15, 16¹⁵Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:) ¹⁶And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labors, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labors out of the field. (Exodus 23:15‑16).

CALLED

Appointed feasts. Isa. 1:14¹⁴Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. (Isaiah 1:14).

Feasts of the Lord. Lev. 23:4⁴These are the feasts of the Lord, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons. (Leviticus 23:4).

Solemn feasts. 2 Chr. 8:13¹³Even after a certain rate every day, offering according to the commandment of Moses, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts, three times in the year, even in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles. (2 Chronicles 8:13) Lam. 1:4⁴The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness. (Lamentations 1:4).

Solemn meetings. Isa. 1:13¹³Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. (Isaiah 1:13).

Were Eucharistic. Psa. 122:4⁴Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the Lord. (Psalm 122:4).

All males to attend. Ex. 23:17¹⁷Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord God. (Exodus 23:17). Ex. 34:23²³Thrice in the year shall all your men children appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel. (Exodus 34:23).

Children commenced attending, when twelve years old. Luke 2:42⁴²And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. (Luke 2:42).

Females often attended. 1 Sam. 1:3, 9³And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there. (1 Samuel 1:3)
⁹So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the Lord. (1 Samuel 1:9). Luke 2:41⁴¹Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. (Luke 2:41).

The Jews attended gladly. Psa. 122:1, 2¹<<A Song of degrees of David.>> I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. ²Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem. (Psalm 122:1‑2).

The Jews went up to, in large companies. Psa. 42:4⁴When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. (Psalm 42:4) Luke 2:44⁴⁴But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. (Luke 2:44).

The dangers and difficulties encountered in going up to, alluded to. Psa. 84:6, 7⁶Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools. ⁷They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God. (Psalm 84:6‑7).

The land divinely protected during. Ex. 34:24²⁴For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the Lord thy God thrice in the year. (Exodus 34:24).

Offerings to be made at. Ex. 34:20²⁰But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before me empty. (Exodus 34:20). Deut. 16:16, 17¹⁶Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the Lord empty: ¹⁷Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God which he hath given thee. (Deuteronomy 16:16‑17).

WERE SEASONS OF

Joy and gladness. Psa. 42:4⁴When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. (Psalm 42:4). Isa. 30:29²⁹Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the Lord, to the mighty One of Israel. (Isaiah 30:29).

Sacrificing. 1 Sam. 1:3³And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there. (1 Samuel 1:3). 1 Kin. 9:25. 2 Chr. 3:13¹³The wings of these cherubims spread themselves forth twenty cubits: and they stood on their feet, and their faces were inward. (2 Chronicles 3:13).

Entertainments. 1 Sam. 1:4, 9⁴And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions: (1 Samuel 1:4)

The Jews dispersed in distant parts often attended. Acts 2:5-11⁵And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. ⁶Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. ⁷And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? ⁸And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? ⁹Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, ¹⁰Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, ¹¹Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. (Acts 2:5‑11). Acts 8:27²⁷And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, (Acts 8:27).

Christ attended. John 5:1¹After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. (John 5:1). John 7:10¹⁰But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. (John 7:10).

Rendered unavailing by the impiety of the Jews. Isa. 1:13,14¹³Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. ¹⁴Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. (Isaiah 1:13‑14). Amos 5:21²¹I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. (Amos 5:21).
