The produce of corn, &c. Deut. 22:9⁹Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled. (Deuteronomy 22:9). Psa. 107:37³⁷And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase. (Psalm 107:37).

The produce of trees. Gen. 1:29²⁹And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. (Genesis 1:29). Ecc. 2:5.

CALLED THE

Fruit of the ground. Gen. 4:3³And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. (Genesis 4:3). Jer. 7:20²⁰Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched. (Jeremiah 7:20).

Fruit of the earth. Isa. 4:2²In that day shall the branch of the Lord be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel. (Isaiah 4:2).

Increase of the land. Psa. 85:12¹²Yea, the Lord shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase. (Psalm 85:12).

Given by God. Acts 14:17¹⁷Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. (Acts 14:17).

Preserved to us by God. Mal. 3:11¹¹And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. (Malachi 3:11).

REQUIRE

A fruitful land. Psa. 107:34³⁴A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. (Psalm 107:34).

Rain from heaven. Psa. 104:13¹³He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works. (Psalm 104:13). James 5:18¹⁸And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. (James 5:18).

Influence of the sun and moon. Deut. 33:14¹⁴And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon, (Deuteronomy 33:14).

Produced in their due seasons. Matt. 21:41⁴¹They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. (Matthew 21:41).

First of, devoted to God. Deut. 26:2²That thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a basket, and shalt go unto the place which the Lord thy God shall choose to place his name there. (Deuteronomy 26:2).

DIVIDED INTO

Hasty or precocious. Isa. 28:4⁴And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up. (Isaiah 28:4).

Summer fruits. 2 Sam. 16:1¹And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and an hundred bunches of raisins, and an hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. (2 Samuel 16:1).

New and old. SoS. 7:13.

Goodly. Jer. 11:16¹⁶The Lord called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken. (Jeremiah 11:16).

Pleasant. So. of Sol. 4:16¹⁶Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits. (Song of Solomon 4:16).

Precious. Deut. 33:14¹⁴And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon, (Deuteronomy 33:14).

Evil or bad. Matt. 7:17¹⁷Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. (Matthew 7:17).

To be waited for with patience. James 5:7⁷Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. (James 5:7).

Often sent as presents. Gen. 43:11¹¹And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds: (Genesis 43:11).

OFTEN DESTROYED

In God's anger. Jer. 7:20²⁰Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched. (Jeremiah 7:20).

By blight. Joel 1:12¹²The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men. (Joel 1:12).

By locusts, &c. Deut. 28:38, 39³⁸Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; for the locust shall consume it. ³⁹Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them. (Deuteronomy 28:38‑39). Joel 1:4⁴That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten. (Joel 1:4).

By enemies. Ezek. 25:4⁴Behold, therefore I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk. (Ezekiel 25:4).

By drought. Hag. 1:10¹⁰Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit. (Haggai 1:10).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of effects of repentance. Matt. 3.

Of works of the Spirit. Gal. 5:22, 23²²But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, ²³Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22‑23). Eph. 5:9⁹(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) (Ephesians 5:9).

Of doctrines of Christ. SoS. 2:3.

Of good works. Matt. 7:17, 18¹⁷Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. ¹⁸A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. (Matthew 7:17‑18). PM. 4:17.

Of a holy conversation. Prov. 12:14¹⁴A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him. (Proverbs 12:14). Prov. 18:20²⁰A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. (Proverbs 18:20).

Of praise. Heb. 13:15¹⁵By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. (Hebrews 13:15).

Of the example, &c. of the godly. Prov. 11:30³⁰The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. (Proverbs 11:30).

Of effects of industry. Prov. 31:16, 31¹⁶She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. (Proverbs 31:16)
³¹Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. (Proverbs 31:31).

Of the reward of saints. Isa. 3:10¹⁰Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. (Isaiah 3:10).

Of the reward of the wicked. Jer. 17:9, 10⁹The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? ¹⁰I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. (Jeremiah 17:9‑10).

Of converts to the church. Psa. 72:16¹⁶There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth. (Psalm 72:16). John 4:36³⁶And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. (John 4:36).

(Bad.) of the conduct and conversation of evil men. Matt. 7:17¹⁷Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. (Matthew 7:17). Matt. 12:33³³Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. (Matthew 12:33).
