Gardens.

Often made by the banks of rivers. Num. 24:6⁶As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the Lord hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters. (Numbers 24:6).

KINDS OF, MENTIONED IN SCRIPTURE

Herbs. Deut. 11:10¹⁰For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs: (Deuteronomy 11:10). 1 Kin. 21:2.

Cucumbers. Isa. 1:8⁸And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city. (Isaiah 1:8).

Fruit trees. Ecc. 2:5, 6.

Spices, &c. SoS. 4:16. SoS. 6:2.

Often enclosed. SoS. 4:12.

Often refreshed by fountains. SoS. 4:15.

Taken care of by gardeners. John 20:15¹⁵Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. (John 20:15).

Lodges erected in. Isa. 1:8⁸And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city. (Isaiah 1:8).

Retirement. John 18:1¹When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. (John 18:1).

Burial places. 2 Kin. 21:18, 26. John 19:41⁴¹Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. (John 19:41).

Idolatrous worship. Isa. 1:29²⁹For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen. (Isaiah 1:29). Isa. 65:3³A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick; (Isaiah 65:3).

Blasting of, a punishment. Amos 4:9⁹I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord. (Amos 4:9).

Jews ordered to plant, in Babylon. Jer. 29:5, 28⁵Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them; (Jeremiah 29:5)
²⁸For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them. (Jeremiah 29:28).

OF EDEN

Planted by the Lord. Gen. 2:8⁸And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. (Genesis 2:8).

Called the garden of the Lord. Gen. 13:10¹⁰And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. (Genesis 13:10).

Called the garden of God. Ezek. 28:13¹³Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. (Ezekiel 28:13).

Had every tree good for food. Gen. 2:9⁹And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2:9).

Watered by a river. Gen. 2:10-14¹⁰And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. ¹¹The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; ¹²And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. ¹³And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. ¹⁴And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. (Genesis 2:10‑14).

Man placed in, to dress and keep. Gen. 2:8, 15⁸And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. (Genesis 2:8)
¹⁵And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. (Genesis 2:15).

Man driven from, after the fall. Gen. 3:23, 24²³Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. ²⁴So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. (Genesis 3:23‑24).

Fertility of Canaan like. Gen. 13:10¹⁰And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. (Genesis 13:10). Joel 2:3³A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. (Joel 2:3).

The future state of the Jews shall be like. Isa. 51:3³For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. (Isaiah 51:3). Ezek. 36:35³⁵And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited. (Ezekiel 36:35).

(Well watered,) of spiritual prosperity of the church. Isa. 58:11¹¹And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. (Isaiah 58:11). Jer. 31:12¹²Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all. (Jeremiah 31:12).

(When dried up,) of the wicked. Isa. 1:30³⁰For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water. (Isaiah 1:30).
