He Dwelt Among Us

He “dwelt among us”, and we saw,
Though veiled in human guise,
The mighty God, the Prince of Peace,
Omnipotent, All-wise;
He who upholds the universe,
And all its need supplies.
He “dwelt among us”, and we saw
His power to raise the dead;
That mighty power of old displayed,
At which the darkness fled;
He spake, ‘twas done! and death itself
His high behest obeyed.
He “dwelt among us”, and we saw
His pity to the poor,
His kindness to the fatherless,
His help where sorrow bore;
Dispensing freely, as He went,
His precious, heavenly store.
He “dwelt among us”, and we saw
In Him the Man of Prayer;
Upon His God and Father, too,
He rolled His every care;
Content, whatever was His will,
To suffer and to bear.
He “dwelt among us”, and we saw
Perfection in His mein;
Yes, perfect grace, and truth, and love,
In Him were ever seen:
Unmoved and undismayed He passed
Through Calvary’s awful scene.
He “dwelt among us,” and subdued
The powers of death and hell;
And now He’s gone again to heaven,
And O! with rapture tell,
He’ll shortly come to take us home,
That we with Him may dwell.
