Hebrews 1-4 Part 2

Address—Clarence Lunden
DISCLAIMER: The following has been auto-transcribed. We hope it will help you to find the section of this audio file you are looking for.
In terms of the.
Hebrew.
We noticed at the end of the last chapter that.
The High Priest is brought before us.
And that's really the subject of the epistle.
Now in the beginning of this chapter is a.
Prescription. Uh, this priesthood.
And uh, I would like to emphasize that it has three aspects. Priesthood takes 3.
UH, characters.
First, an everlasting priesthood.
Because he may have told us.
And that is it. A priesthood after the order of Aaron, our infirmities and presence.
And that we stood after they already built his effect where his Kenyan priests at the same time.
Now these are foundation truths, beloved, that we should be acquainted with all of us.
Because this is what gives us comfort and joy.
Not all the details. That's good too, in our time to read them and enjoy them, but at least to have these fundamental truths.
Also Timothy hold fast, the form of sound words that means to hold fast and outline of truth.
Now you know very well that no matter how hard we study.
We were thinking of only that you and I would never get very far in the scriptures in the short life of ours as to detail, but.
We're expected to have an outline of truth.
This is what will keep us. This will is what will bring us joy.
And will be for the glory of our blessed Savior and the salvation of soul.
And so, if we could just get a little outline of truth, well, last evening we had the Lord Jesus theme as the Son of God.
Period. Angels, because they're not some. He is God.
And is Jehovah the Creator?
In the second chapter, we noticed that the World Cup will not be in the hands of angels. They're set aside.
And the Lord Jesus with the church.
Will be a son over his own house. That's the universe, the house that he created.
And who's are you?
You're part of that house.
If you haven't believed in dance.
And then we noticed that there was a warning for those who were having.
Heard.
UH reviewed the testimony, like those who brought the large bunch of grapes to the people, that there's lions, there's giants in the land we have.
There's no money because of unbelief. And so the warning answer those now who have the gospel.
Read to us like a month of them only now a fuller gospel.
Saw mourning for those who reject such a gospel.
There's two things necessary we discovered.
We're going to enter that rest have to have the word thought.
With great diversity.
Now this is a summary of the general thoughts of these four chapters that we had last evening.
Tonight I'd like to speak a little of the three aspects of the priesthood.
The first one that's mentioned really is.
And they uh, they stood after the order.
Of Aaron. I remember when Moses first rose up, it was when he was great and he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter.
And then he fled into the wilderness.
00:05:03
And uh.
He doesn't know why for the daughters of pullback, and he was there 40 years.
And he had to unlearn what he had learned in Egypt.
Yeah, to get rid of all the trash you've learned in each.
And then he was able.
Uh, to leave the children of Israel out. But he didn't know it. He thought that years before that he was able when he flew the Egyptians, but he found out he wasn't able there.
But when he was able, he didn't know it. And someone gossips. You go and deliver my people. Why? He said I can't speak. Well, they sit here and your brother will do the speaking.
Now this was a thought. You know why?
Because.
The Lord Jesus in Hebrews is king and priest.
Moses was king in Joshua. To get that in the Old Testament, Aaron was the priest.
Moses was the one who gave the mind of God.
Aaron was the one who brought them into the presence of God by way of the sight.
And it never would have done for one man to carry both of those idols.
God never intended one man to. He was testing, he was testing his serving and he refused because I can't speak.
So we get the lovely type here of Aaron that we're reading about.
Because the things that were written before time were written for our learning.
Not on the ends of the ages have come.
What do we learn from this?
Oh, we learned that we have a priest that is interested in our infirmities. That's something to learn.
Just remember, beloved, when you feel that nobody cares.
That nobody's interested in your problem. You can look up and you know, there's one up there that's interesting.
And he knows more about it than you did. And he knows the way out, too. And he'll see.
See you through. That's the priesthood after the order of an era.
Now the Lord Jesus could not be a priest actually after the order of Aaron because he's in heaven. He would have to be a priest on earth.
But you see, and you know it came from the tribe of Judah.
But you see, he was here already.
As in all points in which we were tried, he was tried without sin.
No sand connected any disk drives.
Like there are there are of ours. He was perfect, but still he fell exactly like you would feel and like I would feel.
Even to the tiniest Bay.
He was the true son of man, that is the person. But there never was enough.
Yes, he was a babe and he could feel from the very moment of birth and they.
Until.
He was a mature man.
And he left the state.
And now in the heavens he is able to succor those that are tempted.
Now that's the priesthood after the Order of Eric.
You know, sometimes we learn more by the opposites than we do by the.
Type being an exact Rep of.
What is being said for, And if so were there? There are so many things about Aaron that are just the opposite of Christ. What is that? Aaron die.
So he had to transfer his priest to someone else.
But the Lord Jesus has an everlasting priest.
Aaron had infirmities, so that, uh, he was.
He was not able, able, or capable of.
Doing with Price because he himself is a simple man. Christ bless you.
00:10:01
Aaron was never able to make the sacrifice of who to feed the crosses.
It just held off judgment for one year. Every year I preached how to go into the Most Holy Place through the blood.
Uh, the last whatever. Pull up whatever exactly.
Just to hold off judgment for one year.
But now we find Christ just the opposite, the only one in once.
Having obtained eternal redemption part.
So we have made this UH chapter.
Part of it, at least for now, for every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men and things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
That's the fruit of sin, sins who can have compassion on the ignorant and on them that are out of the way. For that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
There is simply a description of what a high fridge should be, and for reason here are the auditory for the people, so also for himself to offer for sin.
And no man take the dishonor unto himself, but he that is called God, as was Aaron, Aaron was called.
He was not put in by an oath, but he was called.
So also Christ glorified not himself to be made in my priest, but he that said unto him, Thou art my son today have I begotten.
As he said also in another place, thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications, with strong crying and tears on him, that was able to save him from death.
Almost heard that he feared.
Though he were son, leave the AI. Though he was, though he were started, yet learn the obedience by the things which he suffered, and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation under all them that obey him. Call of God and I preached after the order of melted.
Now we have had three. Priesthood mentioned that you probably are looking for the second one.
And we'll have to go back to the Old Testament to get the height, so we'll understand it. But first of all, we're going to notice this first.
About Eric.
Give some sacrifices.
There's quite a contrast, you know, between.
A tremendous contrast between the pictures that Scripture gives us.
Umm, Aaron, in the picture we get across.
We know price.
Is, uh, appreciate in all perfection for Aaron, of course was.
Uh close about of infirmities in every hand, and he was only a a picture.
All priesthood is only a picture, and perhaps more Congress to be said than actual illustrating the point.
And so if a man were to be a priest, he would have to offer gifts and sacrifices. That was his work.
You see, Moses was king in Joshua. He didn't offer gifts and sacrifices.
He was the one who was the spokesman and gave the law.
The orders of people that the priest was the horizon, proximity, precious of God, and relationship with God, although at the distance.
As we mentioned before.
But now this errand. He's a type of Christ in a measure.
And you notice in the first verse that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices. Gifts and sacrifices. Notice that carefully and go to the 8th chapter.
And we'll see what ifs and sacrifices the Lord Jesus offered.
00:15:00
Because he would have to if he was to be a priest.
And beloved, what we're having here is the foundation.
Of all the offices of prices, please.
In the 8th chapter.
Third verse for every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifice, wherefore it is of necessity.
That this man as Christ has somewhat altered to offer.
Now go back to the 27 first of.
The previous chapter.
Chapter 7 and 27.
And the end of the verse for this he did once when he offered of himself.
He was the priest. He was the offering.
And it was a gift. Thanks be to God for some people.
So you see how essential these truths are? Because in Hebrews we have doctrines.
Fundamental doctrines of Christianity, not the truth of the Assembly.
But simply the foundation truth of Christianity. Everything is permanent in Hebrews.
Its eternal salvation, eternal inheritance.
For those who reject.
Everything's perfect.
And you'll notice, too, something very precious in Hebrews that you don't get exactly elsewhere.
It is the blood of Christ.
Perhaps What is the blood of Jesus?
Blood Cheese and that Precious. It's his person and his work healing.
Now, if you're really concerned about these precious things, this should mean something to you tonight.
A lot of Jesus. A man that walked down here, the one who has called us to be the companion forever.
Spirit of God sets him before us His person and his work is the blood of Jesus.
We'll speak more of that later.
Now what is the priest to do? Who can have compassion?
On the ignorance.
It never occurred to you, dear fellow Christian, that you were a priest.
Did it ever occur to you we're kings and priests?
Does this have any voice for me tonight? Do I have compassion on the Eagles?
Priest is supposed to do that.
Or do we ride roughshod over them?
Do we have any?
The Lord was characterized by compassion.
And then they're out of the way.
We have compassion on them. They're out of the way.
Well, you say, well, I can't walk with certain sister or certain brother. Well, maybe you can't. But you can have compassion on them, can't you?
Maybe they're going on very badly, but you can have compassion.
Even the book of Jews that speaks of apostasy speaks of saving them out of the fire.
Spirit of Christ.
You're free.
And so he has to offer for Sims, not only for the people, but for himself.
Because he was upset, Jesus blessed Jesus didn't have to offer for himself, but he did offer for us.
00:20:06
No, we wouldn't offer it.
Now on the 1St floor it says that no man takes a dishonor unto himself.
But neither is called of God as was there.
The Lord Jesus was more than simply caught.
You notice in the.
In the 21St verse of the 8th chapter or the 7th chapter?
For those priests were made without an oath. They were called, but were made without an oath.
That's it, with an old by him that said unto him, The Lord, swear and will not repent thou art decree forever after the order of.
So the Lord Jesus was made of priests by oath.
Not simply call. It's permanent, it's forever.
Aaron's praise You would have to see another taking place.
That.
Now we have introduced a second priesthood, and that's no kids today.
How tip is that?
And before we speak to Melchizedek, I would like to speak of the one that really comes before even Aaron.
And this we get in the seventh verse.
Who in the days of His flesh, when he had offered up prayers and suffocation, with strong crying tears on him, that was able to save him not from death, but out of death, He went through it, but He saved you out of it.
And was heard in that he feared.
That as he was hurt for his pilot. What does that mean? Well, that's a little difficult because.
Because it's it's very important truth that is.
The Lord Jesus made no reservations, no qualifications when he offered himself.
He didn't say to the Father. Now I want this offering to apply to the salvation of souls or any qualifications whatsoever.
They said it's that's what it means.
Perfect submission.
It's all enough.
Beyond measure, it is gave himself. Oh, I think that's precious, perfect trust and confidence in his father he gave himself.
It truly gave itself for our sins, but we learned that because that was God's purpose.
But simply, as a man offering himself an independence upon God, he just gave himself.
God saw to us that it covered our sins.
He's escaping himself.
He was heard for his pilot.
Get that into March and or another translation.
Heard in that he feared not fears in the sense that people use the word fear generally, but because of the position he took his man as a servant leading up to death.
Though he were some yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered, and being made perfect, he became the author of the eternal salvation.
And all them little babies.
Ovadia.
Take the same car seat up early. Convenience. That's your path.
Eternal salvation to all them that obey.
Now, this priesthood we're going to notice in the 25th chapter of Numbers.
00:25:10
In the 25th chapter of Numbers, The Children of Israel.
Had turned to wickedness just before the end of the land. A plague had broken out among them.
And how is the place to be stopped?
Well.
Read the seven first and let thinner head the son of Eliezer, the son of Aaron the priest.
Saw it, He rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand. And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through the man of Israel, and the woman through her valley. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
Those that died in the plague were 20 and 4000, and the Lord's taken to Moses, saying, Finna has the son of Elevation, the son of Aaron. The priest had turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake, among them that I consumed not the children of Israel, and my jealous.
Wherefore, safe, behold, I give unto him my couple of thieves, and he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was settled for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
Now this is the first order of priesthood that we have in Hebrews, actually.
If the priesthood after the order of Finnex, the son of Aaron the priest, we've had Aaron of the type, now we have Sinnatham as a tie.
The thinner has is really the first pipe.
And just like Aaron Finna has, gives us a picture that is just in the reverse.
And it's often so tight because God wants us to get the point. He doesn't want us to be occupied with the time.
That's the purpose of parables and types. They're striking. They impress the heart and Parsons with the truth. And left we forgot.
Hi.
That's why there's so much illustrations of scripture are so much better than any we can find in this world through which we're passing because of the inspired word of God.
And now there's the picture here. Simply he made it.
So he's made it from.
He turns God's wrath away from the children of Israel.
But in doing so, he slew the one that was guilty the.
In order that he might have an everlasting priesthood, he didn't slay the ones who were guilty, because you and I would have been banished to them.
You could replace.
When you make the phone.
He took our place and he turned around and thought away from us by taking our place in just.
All of those waves and villains rolled over Jesus in our place.
He took our place.
He made a comment. Now this is the solid basis upon which the priesthood rests. All his other offices rest upon the fact that he made it fullness. He had an everlasting priesthood because he made his honor.
As we noticed in the 8th chapter, a man were to be a priest, he would have to have something to offer. First, he'd have to be a man.
Jesus was that, then. He'd have to have something to offer. He'd have that.
You offered yourself.
He turned God's wrath away. He made his phone.
God's people. So it's people who feel free.
To stop the play.
Oh, what a SEC.
Well then we've had the priesthood after the order of Aaron, which we need now because of our infirmities.
00:30:03
Anytime we lie as we were singing, and he's up there not pleading with God so that you and I might have our sins look like that was done long ago across the county.
He's not interceding for us so that we'll escape the wrath of God.
The thing has passed, it's all set.
There's standard iniquities. I'll remember no more. Why is he under seating there? Because of our infirmities.
Because of our legal system.
And he's providing so that all you and I have to do is go to that throne of grace and receive the grace you need for the problem at hand. Do we really believe this, friend?
Is this a part of our Christian life in practice?
And we go to that scroll and receive seasonable help.
Should be here. Practice will continue like.
What a glorious experience with the Christian to have day by day to see the hands of God in these circumstances.
Problems that arise.
Discover that the Lord is able to speak day by day and definitely see the hand of God in them.
This is.
They call it a victorious life of so-called it. That's what it is.
And you know, oftentimes there's so many things we allow in our lives that.
Hinder our souls from getting into His presence, and there's so many things that we're occupied with that are not pleasing with to the Lord, really.
That you may not be able to hear, our friends.
Steel is up there when they're seating.
So now we have the the priesthood act of the Order of Melchizedek. We haven't spoken up.
1St we have Finnehas Priesthood. They already makes it total.
We are the priesthood of Aaron in connection with our infirmities.
And that's the priesthood.
In which you see now on high.
Acting Forest in our weakness down here.
But the day is coming when he will take his full character as priest after the order of Melchizedek.
And now if you'll turn to the.
That's a chapter. You will notice a little more about Melissa today.
Although Melchizedek is really not the subject of hebrons.
Because he can't act according to that order yet, although he is a priest after that order.
He will not be able to act fully, and that's capacity until he's king on the throne, and then he'll dispense grace and grace.
That's when the desert will blossom like the Rose.
That's when the inhabitant no more shall say I'm sick, but they shall be forgiven their infirmity. That's when men will live 1000 years on earth, never be sick, and not die.
It's coming.
And the list of things around is coming fast.
OK, Any day, any moment now before we leave this room, we'll be able to speak to the president.
In the globe, in those holy courts, are we walking in path of holiness now?
Or whether it be a tremendous change, Jesus, God.
So the pattern changed tremendously, the pattern of our lives.
Well, in the 7th chapter for this milk today king of Salem.
That means King of Thieves.
Priests are the most high God who met Abraham, returning from the slaughter of the kings and lefties, whom also Abram gave a tenth part of all, first being by interpretation King of Righteousness and after that also King of Salem which gives King of Peace.
00:35:01
Without father, without mother, without his death, having either beginning of days or end of life, but made light under the sun of God, abideth the priest continued it.
Now many have gotten bogged down by trying to discover who this Melchizedek was.
But they missed the whole point, because God never intended for you to know who he was.
Just the time.
Whenever we get occupied with this type, we missed the whole point.
What the tides are for is it teaches the lesson.
To leave the rest go.
I don't know who most of the day was. I don't understand this.
We're not told to understand it, we're told to believe it.
Everything will be nice clear in that day.
It's hard to think of a human being on earth without beginning or end, isn't it?
And so God does not intend for us to try to discover who this person was.
But we know that's about him. When he met Abraham, he brought bread and wine.
It speaks of that which sustains and that which brings joy.
That's what he brought labor after the battle.
Yes.
And that's what this was going to have after the battle, when they're back in the land again and they make their milkshake, the deck king, they're going to have red and white.
They're going to have that which will sustain them. They'll never be short of breath again, never forever.
And they'll never be short of joy forever.
Oh, what a day that'll be on the earth. And long before that you'll be in the glory in our portion forever with each other.
Love Deep Restaurant?
Well, we have no physics then, and the order of his priesthood is.
Uh, an everlasting priesthood, and he's king of righteousness and king of peace. In the In the eternal state, righteousness will dwell, but in the morning all day, righteousness will reign. And that's what we have here, righteousness reigning.
That is, there will be no corruption in politics in that day.
There'll be one king.
And he will dictate to his people what they're doing. Everything will be in order in that day.
Because Priceline.
No doubt through a friend as we learn in zinc film, but still the array.
King of righteousness, let's think of the term.
He's king of glory too, That is a king of righteousness. He.
You know we learned in Ephesians for the Christian now that he is our peace, since not simply that he we have peace through the blood, so that we we know our sins involved. That's precious, but not as precious as the other.
Yes, remember that when sorrow and trouble trial comes and there's no comfort anywhere else.
And if you haven't seen them, you may see days like that.
When comfort will never come from anything except there.
No, I'm sad. It is for the poor world around us who do not know the safety. They cannot say he is our peace.
That threshold, that coming day, he'll be king of Peace.
What a wonderful expression.
Now in the same chapter we already have noticed.
I always should, uh, read the 12Th, 1St.
00:40:00
For the priesthood being changed, there is made a necessity, a change also of the law.
For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, which no man gave attendance of the altar for his evidence, that our Lord sprang out of Judah.
That tried to Levi, but Judith, of which tribe Moses makes nothing concerning priesthood.
That is, yes, far more evident that after the similitude of Melchizedek.
Their rise is another priest.
I know it's who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment.
But after the power of an endless light.
Erin Dyer.
Our praise will be.
The power of an endless life. Not simply an endless life, but the power of it.
Before he testified Thou art free forever after the order of Melchizedek, Quotation from Psalm 10.
Now the 18th and 19th verses. For this is verily a disembowelling of the commandment, and going before of the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did by the which we draw an eye on the God.
I'm going to simplify those two verses.
And leave out the.
Part that we write totally for us.
There's a settlement side of the commandments.
And the bringing in of a better hope by which we draw light of God. That's the reason.
There's a setting aside of the old order, the law, part of amendment, and the bringing in about better hope.
By which we are right enough. We don't call the night and call it on the ground of the law.
And yet most of the Christmas has gone back to the order of the law. They wouldn't say so.
But aren't they under the law when they you ask them or you say, well, I hope so.
The county on some Good thing they're going to keep themselves in a position where God will pay for them.
They don't know that their whole favor rest of how God accepted Jesus.
He accepted my substitute.
That's how I accepted.
Accepted by Substitute.
Setting aside of the commandment.
The bringing in of a better hope by the which we draw a knife we saw. Oh, how precious this is.
To draw a nice God by a better.
That's the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who's on our God?
Now those frees were made without an oath, but this with an oath.
The Lord swear and will not repent. Thou art priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
What does that mean to you and me?
What's up there?
Our own happiness he turned for eternity and our position for eternity.
And our life for eternity all rests upon the fact that Jesus lived as a man.
Forever.
He could stay in the 14th of John, because I live, ye shall live.
Because he lives as a man on high forever. You and I will live forever, and that's the only reason we will live forever.
If you'll turn to Romans for a verse.
You know, sometimes by comparing these verses we learn the meaning of them better.
Versions that sometimes puzzle us.
Next verse of the 5th chapter roll.
00:45:08
For it when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son. Much more being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Really, in the power of that life is what it makes.
For all eternity.
Days in the power of that light.
A new principle of life in Christ Jesus.
It's Webber founder.
The old principle of sin and death is gone.
There is a new principle of life. We have in fact.
Now it's different, of course, but a little differently in that Roman than it is needed.
Because it's a question of faith and righteousness, here is a question.
Of our standing in connection with the priest, it made its own.
All the same truth, but a little different aspect of it.
Yeah, 22nd verse we get a word that perhaps doesn't occur to many places, if any other place.
We hear brothers quoting it sometimes, this word, but here we get it by so much.
Was Jesus that Christ not the Son of God? Notice by so much was Jesus that the man, the man Christ Jesus his own name was made? Was Jesus made assurance?
He's the short.
He was the substitute, but he's assured.
That is, the price that was paid was Jesus.
That's how sure you're returning salvation.
The price that was paid was Jesus gave his life, he was assured.
Your, your eternity and your eternal happiness rest upon the fact.
And he is that sure.
Now we find that the priest before did not continue by reason of death.
But this man, because he continued ever.
Has an unchangeable priesthood, wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost.
Now, if you could ever think of a time in the future.
That you could speak of at the uttermost.
That's how far your salvation goes.
The other notes.
There's no time.
They all were brought into a system of things that never had a beginning of it.
We were brought in in time that we belonged to that system. Now the bad word to use I don't know any better because it's got a system, It's an order of life.
Because we use the word.
That which never had a beginning and will never have an end. Everything.
And you and I have been brought into it simply by a little touch of faith.
26 verse For such a high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and make it higher than the heavens. That's what he is now.
Bowling, Harley, Harley, Harley.
Undefiled separate from sender.
Hidden in bar.
00:50:01
Angel stopped them.
No.
You learned in the first chapter of Heapers we didn't have time to speak of it and we'll just mention it.
The sixth verse.
Where is the soft and misunderstood in the slide to loop 2, which is not a family at all? This does not refer to the first time that Jesus came into the world. This refers to when he comes again.
And again, when he bringeth in the first Begotten of the world, he said, and let all the angels of God worship him. They won't see him until that moment, these kids and God. And beloved, that's where our life is hid with Christ and God.
And again when he bring it.
Uh, the first begotten into the world is that and that all the angels of God worship him.
Ma'am, all the names of God are going to fall prostate before Jesus a man. Yet the race of man was lower than Angel.
And he left the the children of Abraham of hiring angels.
And angels will be the servants in that coming day of glory.
We have a place of Sutton's grace.
Well, closing this chapter then.
Who needed not daily as those high priests, verse 27 to OfferUp sacrifice first for his own sins and then for the people. For this he did once when he offered up himself.
For the lawmakers, men I preach, which have infirmity but the word of the oath.
Where did the O?
That is going back to the 21St verse. You see the word of the oath, which was since the law.
Maketh the son who is consecrated forevermore.
He's concentrated forevermore, so we have.
Eternal life, everlasting life, and forevermore.
They all mean the same thing.
So we're seeing that little hymn 122.
