Hidden by the Lord

Mac Greenly lived in Alaska quite a few years ago. Mac was a new Christian, and he was delighted when the Lord caused him to meet a missionary there by the name of Everett Baker. Not only did Everett love the Lord Jesus and have much of the Word of God memorized, but he also loved to give out gospel tracts. Everett traveled up and down the Yukon and other rivers where the Eskimos had settled. He entered the villages shouting, “Mail, mail, mail from heaven!” and the people gathered and eagerly accepted the tracts he gave them. During the winter months he traveled with his sled and team of dogs over the hard snow, but in the summer, he travelled on the rivers by kayak.
One day Everett asked Mac if he could get him permission to give out tracts on the military base where Mac worked, where at least 2,000 servicemen were stationed.
“Oh, I don’t think so, Everett,” Mac replied. “The base is under such high security all the time that I can’t imagine it would ever be allowed!”
“Would you try?” Everett asked. So, Mac promised he would.
The next day he asked the security officer. “I wouldn’t be able to say anything about that. You’ll have to see the Commander,” he answered. Mac was very nervous, but he went to the Commanding Officer.
“What do you want?” the officer asked roughly.
“I’d like to ask permission for a friend of mine to come to the base and give out gospel tracks to the servicemen,” answered Mac.
“What kind of stuff have you got there?” asked the officer.
Mac showed him a few tracts and he read a couple of them while Mac waited nervously. Then, “I think this would be good for the boys,” he said. What a wonderful answer to prayer!
Mac went off with a happy heart and the next morning, bright and early, he went to Everett’s house to pick him up. Everett brought along his big Husky dog with its saddlebags stuffed full of tracts. Emblazoned on the saddlebags in large gold letters on an orange background were the words, “God is light. 1 John 1:55This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5)” on one bag and “God is love. 1 John 4:1616And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. (1 John 4:16)” on the other. Mac took Everett to the mess hall, and the last he saw of Everett that morning he was going up the long line of men waiting for their food, talking a little with each one and giving every man a tract that would bring him the message of God’s amazing love that wanted to save them from going to hell.
When Mac had finished his day’s work, he went looking for Everett. He soon found him with his dog, and they all got into his car.
When Mac returned to the base after a happy evening with Everett and his wife, he was instantly surrounded by security officers. “Where’s that man you brought here this morning?” they demanded. “We’ve been looking for him all day! He’s been in every area of the base—even in the highest security hangars. He could have been shot half a dozen times over. What was he doing here anyway?”
Mac gave each of them a couple of tracts. “He was giving these out to the men. The Commanding Officer gave him permission. I didn’t have any trouble finding him with that big dog and those saddlebags with ‘God is light and God is love’ on them in such big, bright letters.” “Oh, go on!” they said.
In Psalm 119:114,114Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word. (Psalm 119:114) King David said of the Lord, “Thou art my hiding place.” Everett Baker could say that too! Children, can you say that the Lord is your hiding place? Do you know Him as your very own Savior and best Friend? If so, then He is your hiding place as well.
Memory verse: “Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in Thy word.” Psalm 119:114114Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word. (Psalm 119:114)
