Mr. McCain was in trouble! He kept some of the equipment for his cleaning business in a storage unit. One morning he went to this unit to get some things that he needed for work. As he approached the gate, he put in a code that opened it and drove to his unit. But when he came back to the gate on his way out, instead of the sensor realizing he was there and opening the gate . . . nothing happened!
Mr. McCain got out of his van and shook the gate, but it wouldn’t move. Then he climbed over the gate and put in the code he had used to get in. Still, the gate would not open!
It was only 8:00 in the morning, and he knew the office wouldn’t open for another hour. So he decided to walk over to the office to see if there was a sign that gave him a number to call. It was only the number for the closed office, but he decided to call it anyway. As he listened to the end of the recorded message, he heard a cell phone number given to use in case of an emergency. Mr. McCain called this number, but no one answered. He waited about 3 minutes and called again. This time he got a text message: “I can’t talk right now!” Oh great, he thought to himself. Then he decided to call again so the lady would know this was fairly urgent.
Finally, she answered. Mr. McCain told her the situation he was in. The news she told him was not good! She explained to him that she was at the airport and was about to get on a plane! The thought of leaving his van on the other side of the gate until the lady got back from her trip didn’t make Mr. McCain feel very happy. It seemed that his van was trapped!
Children, do you understand that you are also trapped? The Bible tells us we are born in sin, and so we all need a Savior who can rescue us! The Lord Jesus is that Savior. “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:1515This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. (1 Timothy 1:15)). Thankfully, God never sends us a message saying He can’t listen to our prayers right now or that He is too busy! First of all, we need to call upon Him to be saved from being trapped in our sins. The good news is that “whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:2121And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Acts 2:21)). Once we are saved, there are many other verses in the Bible that encourage us to call on Him and promise that He will answer us: “Because He hath inclined His ear unto me, therefore will I call upon Him as long as I live” (Psalm 116:22Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. (Psalm 116:2)). The Lord Jesus is so happy when we call to Him! He loves to hear our voices and answer our needs.
Getting back to Mr. McCain ... the lady said she would make a quick call to the girl who was supposed to come in at 9:00. She would encourage her to come as soon as possible and let Mr. McCain out. Disappointed, he got ready to wait for a while. He had just gotten back in his van when the lady called back again—she had had an idea! She asked him to once again enter his code and see if that worked to lift up the gate. IT DID! Soon Mr. McCain was on his way and so thankful to be on the other side of that gate!
Children, will you make today be the day you call to the Lord Jesus? He is waiting to hear you right now!
