Law of God, the.

Is absolute and perpetual. Matt. 5:18¹⁸For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. (Matthew 5:18).

GIVEN

To Adam. Gen. 2:16, 17¹⁶And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: ¹⁷But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. (Genesis 2:16‑17), with Rom. 5:12-14¹²Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: ¹³(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. ¹⁴Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. (Romans 5:12‑14).

To Noah. Gen. 9:6⁶Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. (Genesis 9:6).

To the Israelites. Ex. 20:2²I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. (Exodus 20:2), &c. Psa. 78:5⁵For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: (Psalm 78:5).

Through Moses. Ex. 31:18¹⁸And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God. (Exodus 31:18). John 7:19¹⁹Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? (John 7:19).

Through the ministration of angels. Acts 7:53⁵³Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. (Acts 7:53). Gal. 3:19¹⁹Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. (Galatians 3:19). Heb. 2:2²For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; (Hebrews 2:2).

DESCRIBED AS

Pure. Psa. 19:8⁸The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. (Psalm 19:8).

Spiritual. Rom. 7:14¹⁴For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. (Romans 7:14).

Holy, just, and good. Rom. 7:12¹²Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. (Romans 7:12).

Exceeding broad. Psa. 119:96⁹⁶I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad. (Psalm 119:96).

Perfect. Psa. 19:7⁷The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. (Psalm 19:7). Rom. 12:2²And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2).

Truth. Psa. 119:142¹⁴²Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth. (Psalm 119:142).

Not grievous. 1 John. 5:3.

Requires obedience of the heart. Psa. 51:6⁶Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. (Psalm 51:6). Matt. 5:28²⁸But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. (Matthew 5:28). Matt. 22:37³⁷Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (Matthew 22:37).

Requires perfect obedience. Deut. 27:26²⁶Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen. (Deuteronomy 27:26). Gal. 3:10¹⁰For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. (Galatians 3:10). James 2:10¹⁰For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. (James 2:10).

Love is the fulfilling of. Rom. 13:8, 10⁸Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. (Romans 13:8)
¹⁰Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:10). Gal. 5:14¹⁴For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Galatians 5:14). James 2:8⁸If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: (James 2:8).

It is man's duty to keep. Ecc. 12:13.

Man, by nature, not in subjection to. Rom. 7:5⁵For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. (Romans 7:5). Rom. 8:7⁷Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. (Romans 8:7).

Man cannot render perfect obedience to. 1 Kin. 8:46. Ecc. 7:20. Rom. 3:10¹⁰As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (Romans 3:10).

Sin is a transgression of. 1 John. 3:4.

All men have transgressed. Rom. 3:9, 19⁹What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; (Romans 3:9)
¹⁹Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. (Romans 3:19).

Man cannot be justified by. Acts 13:39³⁹And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. (Acts 13:39). Rom. 3:20, 28²⁰Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:20)
²⁸Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. (Romans 3:28). Gal. 2:16¹⁶Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. (Galatians 2:16). Gal. 3:11¹¹But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. (Galatians 3:11).

Gives the knowledge of sin. Rom. 3:20²⁰Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:20). Rom. 7:7⁷What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. (Romans 7:7).

Worketh wrath. Rom. 4:15¹⁵Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. (Romans 4:15).

Conscience testifies to. Rom. 2:15¹⁵Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) (Romans 2:15).

Designed to lead to Christ. Gal. 3:24²⁴Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. (Galatians 3:24).

OBEDIENCE TO

A characteristic of saints. Rev. 12:17¹⁷And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Revelation 12:17).

A test of love. 1 John. 5:3.

Of prime importance. 1 Cor. 7:19¹⁹Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. (1 Corinthians 7:19).

Blessedness of keeping. Psa. 119:1¹ALEPH. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. (Psalm 119:1). Matt. 5:19¹⁹Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:19). 1 John. 3:22, 24. Rev. 22:14¹⁴Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. (Revelation 22:14).

CHRIST

Came to fulfill. Matt. 5:17¹⁷Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. (Matthew 5:17).

Magnified. Isa. 42:21²¹The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honorable. (Isaiah 42:21).

Explained. Matt. 10:32-40³²Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. ³³But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. ³⁴Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. ³⁵For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. ³⁶And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. ³⁷He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. ³⁸And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. ³⁹He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. ⁴⁰He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. (Matthew 10:32‑40). Matt. 21:37-42³⁷But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ³⁸But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. ³⁹And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. ⁴⁰When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? ⁴¹They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. ⁴²Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? (Matthew 21:37‑42).

The love of, produces peace. Psa. 119:165¹⁶⁵Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. (Psalm 119:165).

SAINTS

Freed from the bondage of. Rom. 6:14¹⁴For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. (Romans 6:14). Rom. 7:4, 6⁴Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. (Romans 7:4)
⁶But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. (Romans 7:6). Gal. 3:13¹³Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: (Galatians 3:13).

Freed from the curse of. Gal. 3:13¹³Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: (Galatians 3:13).

Have, written on their hearts. Jer. 31:33³³But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. (Jeremiah 31:33), with Heb. 8:10¹⁰For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: (Hebrews 8:10).

Love. Psa. 119:97,113⁹⁷MEM. O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. (Psalm 119:97)
¹¹³SAMECH. I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love. (Psalm 119:113).

Delight in. Psa. 119:77⁷⁷Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight. (Psalm 119:77). Rom. 7:22²²For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: (Romans 7:22).

Prepare their hearts to seek. Ezra 7:10¹⁰For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments. (Ezra 7:10).

Pledge themselves to walk in. Neh. 10:29²⁹They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God's law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes; (Nehemiah 10:29).

Keep. Psa. 119:55⁵⁵I have remembered thy name, O Lord, in the night, and have kept thy law. (Psalm 119:55).

Pray to understand. Psa. 119:18¹⁸Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. (Psalm 119:18).

Pray for power to keep. Psa. 119:34³⁴Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. (Psalm 119:34).

Should remember. Mal. 4:4⁴Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. (Malachi 4:4).

Should make the subject of their conversation. Ex. 13:9⁹And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the Lord's law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the Lord brought thee out of Egypt. (Exodus 13:9).

Lament over the violation of by others. Psa. 119:136¹³⁶Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law. (Psalm 119:136).

THE WICKED

Despise. Amos 2:4⁴Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the Lord, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked: (Amos 2:4).

Forget. Hos. 4:6⁶My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. (Hosea 4:6).

Forsake. 2 Chr. 12:1¹And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him. (2 Chronicles 12:1). Jer. 9:13¹³And the Lord saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein; (Jeremiah 9:13).

Refuse to hear. Isa. 30:9⁹That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the Lord: (Isaiah 30:9). Jer. 6:19¹⁹Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it. (Jeremiah 6:19).

Refuse to walk in. Psa. 78:10¹⁰They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; (Psalm 78:10).

Cast away. Isa. 5:24²⁴Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 5:24).

Is the rule of life to saints. 1 Cor. 9:21²¹To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. (1 Corinthians 9:21). Gal. 5:13, 14¹³For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. ¹⁴For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Galatians 5:13‑14).

Is the rule of the judgment. Rom. 2:12¹²For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (Romans 2:12).

To be used lawfully. 1 Tim. 1:8⁸But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; (1 Timothy 1:8).

Established by faith. Rom. 3:31³¹Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. (Romans 3:31).

Punishment for disobeying. Neh. 9:26, 27²⁶Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations. ²⁷Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. (Nehemiah 9:26‑27), Isa. 65:11-13¹¹But ye are they that forsake the Lord, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number. ¹²Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not. ¹³Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: (Isaiah 65:11‑13). Jer. 9:13-16¹³And the Lord saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein; ¹⁴But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them: ¹⁵Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. ¹⁶I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them. (Jeremiah 9:13‑16).
