Whether the 17th verse be genuine or not, there can be no doubt from what follows that it was the custom to release a prisoner at this time. On the whole the balance seems in its favour, as it would be harsh to act upon an unexplained custom. Some versions omit it. Some MSS. place it after verse 19. Some Edd. omit it as from Matthew or Mark, while others retain the verse.
