The beginning of chapter 3 gives us details of various rulers who were living at the time when John and the Lord Jesus were beginning their public ministry.
The word of God did not come to the religious people who lived in Jerusalem, but to John who was in the wilderness. Could it be because men had no heart for God in their religious ceremonies?
Many people went out to hear John preach, and some realized they were sinners and were baptized. John told the multitude that they must show their repentance by their works. The publicans and bad people believed Him, but the chief priests and elders of the people did not. Even the soldiers demanded of John, “And what shall we do?” It is always good to do what the Word of God says!
Then one day, Jesus came to be baptized by John and something took place that had never happened before: The heaven was opened, and a voice was heard which said, “Thou art My beloved Son; in Thee I am well pleased.” Here was one person that God could find delight in, for He was sinless.
The end of this chapter gives us the genealogy of Joseph who was descended from King David all the way back to Adam, who was created by God.
