or, answerable to amendment of life.
The Lord shows that there is an action of faith needed now; that the kingdom of heaven here presented demands the rupture of natural ties and the giving up of previous associations. In the sense of power and glory introduced by a personal Messiah upon the earth, John had already pressed on consciences that it was not a thing of mere ordinance or privilege by birth — that God would not be content except with moral realities. J. N. Darby Translation

+
8
Producei therefore fruit worthy of repentancek.

JND Translation Notes

+
i
The verb is in the aorist. It is to be the characteristic of the man, not a mere exhortation for the future. "Be in the state of having done it."
k
The word here and elsewhere translated "repentance" denotes the moral judgment of the soul upon all the past, upon all that it is in the flesh before God. It includes, but goes further than, a change of mind.

W. Kelly Translation

+
8
Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance.a

WK Translation Notes

+
a
The plural reading of "fruits" as the T. R. is not correct here. It rightly appears in {vi 25034}{/vi}. The singular reading of "fruit" is supported by many MSS.
