Meekness.

Christ set an example of. Psa. 45:4⁴And in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. (Psalm 45:4). Isa. 53:7⁷He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. (Isaiah 53:7). Matt. 11:29²⁹Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew 11:29). Matt. 21:5⁵Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. (Matthew 21:5). 2 Cor. 10:1¹Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: (2 Corinthians 10:1). 1 Peter 2:21-23²¹For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: ²²Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: ²³Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: (1 Peter 2:21‑23).

His teaching. Matt. 5:38-45³⁸Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: ³⁹But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. ⁴¹And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. ⁴²Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. ⁴³Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. ⁴⁴But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; ⁴⁵That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. (Matthew 5:38‑45).

A fruit of the Spirit. Gal. 5:22, 23²²But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, ²³Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22‑23).

SAINTS SHOULD

Seek. Zeph. 2:3³Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger. (Zephaniah 2:3).

Put on. Col. 3:12, 13¹²Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; ¹³Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. (Colossians 3:12‑13).

Receive the word of God with. James 1:21²¹Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. (James 1:21).

Exhibit, in conduct, &c. James 3:13¹³Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. (James 3:13).

Answer for their hope with. 1 Peter 3:15¹⁵But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: (1 Peter 3:15).

Show, to all men. Titus 3:2²To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men. (Titus 3:2).

Restore the erring with. Gal. 6:1¹Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. (Galatians 6:1).

Precious in the sight of God. 1 Peter 3:4⁴But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. (1 Peter 3:4).

MINISTERS SHOULD

Follow after. 1 Tim. 6:11¹¹But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. (1 Timothy 6:11).

Instruct opposers with. 2 Tim. 2:24, 25²⁴And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, ²⁵In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; (2 Timothy 2:24‑25).

Urge, on their people. Titus 3:1, 2¹Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, ²To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men. (Titus 3:1‑2).

A characteristic of wisdom. James 3:17¹⁷But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. (James 3:17).

Necessary to a Christian walk. Eph. 4:1, 2¹I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, ²With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; (Ephesians 4:1‑2). 1 Cor. 6:7⁷Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? (1 Corinthians 6:7).

THEY WHO ARE GIFTED WITH,

Are preserved. Psa. 76:9⁹When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah. (Psalm 76:9).

Are exalted. Psa. 147:6⁶The Lord lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground. (Psalm 147:6). Matt. 23:12¹²And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. (Matthew 23:12).

Are guided and taught. Psa. 25:9⁹The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. (Psalm 25:9).

Are richly provided for. Psa. 22:26²⁶The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. (Psalm 22:26).

Are beautified with salvation. Psa. 149:4⁴For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. (Psalm 149:4).

Increase their joy. Isa. 29:19¹⁹The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 29:19).

Shall inherit the earth. Psa. 37:11¹¹But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. (Psalm 37:11).

The gospel to be preached to those who possess. Isa. 61:1¹The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; (Isaiah 61:1).

Blessedness of. Matt. 5:5⁵Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5)

Exemplified. Moses, Num. 12:3³(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.) (Numbers 12:3). David, 1 Sam. 30:6. 2 Sam. 16:9-12⁹Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. ¹⁰And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the Lord hath said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so? ¹¹And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for the Lord hath bidden him. ¹²It may be that the Lord will look on mine affliction, and that the Lord will requite me good for his cursing this day. (2 Samuel 16:9‑12). Paul, 1 Cor. 4:12¹²And labor, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: (1 Corinthians 4:12). 1 Thess. 2:7⁷But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: (1 Thessalonians 2:7).
