Moon, the.

Created by God. Gen. 1:14¹⁴And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: (Genesis 1:14). Psa. 8:3³When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; (Psalm 8:3).

Made to glorify God. Psa. 148:3³Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. (Psalm 148:3).

Called the lesser light. Gen. 1:16¹⁶And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. (Genesis 1:16).

DESCRIBED AS

Fair. SoS. 6:10.

Bright. Job 31:26²⁶If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; (Job 31:26).

Has a glory of its own. 1 Cor. 15:41⁴¹There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. (1 Corinthians 15:41).

APPOINTED

To divide day from night. Gen. 1:14¹⁴And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: (Genesis 1:14).

For signs and seasons. Gen. 1:14¹⁴And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: (Genesis 1:14). Psa. 104:19¹⁹He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. (Psalm 104:19).

For a light in the firmament. Gen. 1:15¹⁵And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. (Genesis 1:15).

To light the earth by night. Jer. 31:35³⁵Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name: (Jeremiah 31:35).

To rule the night. Gen. 1:16¹⁶And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. (Genesis 1:16). Psa. 136:9⁹The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever. (Psalm 136:9).

By an ordinance forever. Psa. 72:5, 7⁵They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations. (Psalm 72:5)
⁷In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth. (Psalm 72:7). Psa. 89:37³⁷It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah. (Psalm 89:37). Jer. 31:36³⁶If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. (Jeremiah 31:36).

For the benefit of all. Deut. 4:19¹⁹And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. (Deuteronomy 4:19).

Influences vegetation. Deut. 33:14¹⁴And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon, (Deuteronomy 33:14).

First appearance of, a time of festivity. 1 Sam. 20:5, 6⁵And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even. ⁶If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family. (1 Samuel 20:5‑6). Psa. 81:3³Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day. (Psalm 81:3).

MIRACLES CONNECTED WITH;

Standing still in Ajalon. Josh. 10:12, 13¹²Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. ¹³And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. (Joshua 10:12‑13).

Signs in, before the destruction of Jerusalem. Luke 21:25²⁵And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; (Luke 21:25).

Lunacy attributed to the influence of. Psa. 121:6⁶The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. (Psalm 121:6), with Matt. 4:24²⁴And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. (Matthew 4:24).

Worshipped as the queen of heaven. Jer. 7:18¹⁸The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger. (Jeremiah 7:18). Jer. 44:17-19, 25¹⁷But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil. ¹⁸But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine. ¹⁹And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men? (Jeremiah 44:17‑19)
²⁵Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows. (Jeremiah 44:25).

WORSHIPPING OF,

Forbidden to the Jews. Deut. 4:19¹⁹And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. (Deuteronomy 4:19).

Condemned as atheism. Job 31:26, 28²⁶If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; (Job 31:26)
²⁸This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. (Job 31:28).

To be punished with death. Deut. 17:3-6³And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded; ⁴And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and inquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel: ⁵Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die. ⁶At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. (Deuteronomy 17:3‑6).

Jews often guilty of. 2 Kin. 23:5. Jer. 8:2²And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth. (Jeremiah 8:2).

Jews punished for. Jer. 8:1-3¹At that time, saith the Lord, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves: ²And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth. ³And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the Lord of hosts. (Jeremiah 8:1‑3).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of glory of Christ in the Church. Isa. 60:20²⁰Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. (Isaiah 60:20).

Of fairness of the Church. SoS. 6:10.

Of changeableness of the world. Rev. 12:1¹And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: (Revelation 12:1).

(Becoming as blood,) of judgments. Rev. 6:12¹²And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; (Revelation 6:12).

(Withdrawing her light,) of deep calamities. Isa. 13:10¹⁰For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. (Isaiah 13:10). Joel 2:10¹⁰The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: (Joel 2:10). Joel 3:15¹⁵The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. (Joel 3:15). Matt. 24:29²⁹Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: (Matthew 24:29).
