The following Expository Notes on The Minor Prophets, from the pen of the author of The Moral Glory of the Lord Jesus, appeared in the monthly issues of a Biblical magazine some fifty-five years ago. They contain truths which, although little heard of in our day, are of an abiding value to the people of God.
As the present dispensation of grace approaches its end, as the long-predicted upheaval of the world kingdoms and their judgment at the hand of God draws nigh, and the “glorious things” which God has spoken concerning His covenant people of Israel are about to be fulfilled, these words of God’s prophets of olden time, which were not brought by the will of men, but spoken by them “from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:2121For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2 Peter 1:21) RV), come to be of special interest and value to us, “upon whom the ends of the ages are come” (1 Cor. 10:1111Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. (1 Corinthians 10:11) RV). And as the Apostle speaks in 2 Peter 1:19,19We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: (2 Peter 1:19) we are to take heed to the word of prophecy, as “unto a lamp that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the Day-Star arise.” (RV). May such be the use made of these expository notes from the pen of the Lord’s departed servant.
