Given by God. Psa. 104:14, 15¹⁴He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; ¹⁵And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. (Psalm 104:14‑15). Jer. 31:12¹²Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all. (Jeremiah 31:12). Joel 2:19, 24¹⁹Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen: (Joel 2:19)
²⁴And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil. (Joel 2:24).

Comes from the earth. (Psalm 104:14‑15). Hos. 2:22²²And the earth shall hear the corn, and the wine, and the oil; and they shall hear Jezreel. (Hosea 2:22).

KINDS OF, MENTIONED;

Olive. Ex. 30:24²⁴And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: (Exodus 30:24). Lev. 24:2²Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually. (Leviticus 24:2).

Myrrh. Esther 2:12¹²Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odors, and with other things for the purifying of the women;) (Esther 2:12).

Extracted by presses. Hag. 2;16, with Mic. 6:15¹⁵Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine. (Micah 6:15).

The poor employed in extracting. Job 24:11¹¹Which make oil within their walls, and tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst. (Job 24:11).

Canaan abounded in. Deut. 8:8⁸A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey; (Deuteronomy 8:8).

DESCRIBED AS

Soft. Psa. 55:21²¹The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords. (Psalm 55:21).

Smooth. Prov. 5:3³For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: (Proverbs 5:3).

Penetrating. Psa. 109:18¹⁸As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones. (Psalm 109:18).

Healing. Isa. 1:6⁶From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. (Isaiah 1:6), with Luke 10:34³⁴And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. (Luke 10:34).

The ointments of the Jews made of perfumes mixed with. Ex. 30:23-25²³Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, ²⁴And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: ²⁵And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. (Exodus 30:23‑25). John 12:3³Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment. (John 12:3).

Jews often extravagant in the use of. Prov. 21:17¹⁷He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. (Proverbs 21:17).

Was titheable by the law. Deut. 12:17¹⁷Thou mayest not eat within thy gates the tithe of thy corn, or of thy wine, or of thy oil, or the firstlings of thy herds or of thy flock, nor any of thy vows which thou vowest, nor thy freewill offerings, or heave offering of thine hand: (Deuteronomy 12:17).

First-fruits of, given to God. Deut. 18:4⁴The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him. (Deuteronomy 18:4). 2 Chr. 31:5⁵And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly. (2 Chronicles 31:5). Neh. 19:37.

USED

For food. 1 Kin. 17:12. Ezek. 16:13¹³Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper into a kingdom. (Ezekiel 16:13).

For anointing the person. Psa. 23:5⁵Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. (Psalm 23:5). Psa. 104:15¹⁵And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. (Psalm 104:15). Luke 7:46⁴⁶My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. (Luke 7:46).

For anointing to offices of trust. Ex. 29:7⁷Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him. (Exodus 29:7). 1 Sam. 10:1¹Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance? (1 Samuel 10:1). 1 Kin. 19:16.

For anointing the sick. Mar. 6:13. James 5:14¹⁴Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: (James 5:14).

In God's worship. Lev. 7:10¹⁰And every meat offering, mingled with oil, and dry, shall all the sons of Aaron have, one as much as another. (Leviticus 7:10). Num. 15:4-10⁴Then shall he that offereth his offering unto the Lord bring a meat offering of a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of oil. ⁵And the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering shalt thou prepare with the burnt offering or sacrifice, for one lamb. ⁶Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare for a meat offering two tenth deals of flour mingled with the third part of an hin of oil. ⁷And for a drink offering thou shalt offer the third part of an hin of wine, for a sweet savor unto the Lord. ⁸And when thou preparest a bullock for a burnt offering, or for a sacrifice in performing a vow, or peace offerings unto the Lord: ⁹Then shall he bring with a bullock a meat offering of three tenth deals of flour mingled with half an hin of oil. ¹⁰And thou shalt bring for a drink offering half an hin of wine, for an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the Lord. (Numbers 15:4‑10).

In idolatrous worship. Hos. 2:5, 8⁵For their mother hath played the harlot: she that conceived them hath done shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink. (Hosea 2:5)
⁸For she did not know that I gave her corn, and wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they prepared for Baal. (Hosea 2:8).

For lamps. Ex. 25:6⁶Oil for the light, spices for anointing oil, and for sweet incense, (Exodus 25:6). Ex. 27:20²⁰And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always. (Exodus 27:20). Matt. 25:3³They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: (Matthew 25:3).

When fresh especially esteemed. Psa. 92:10¹⁰But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil. (Psalm 92:10).

Dealing in, a trade. 2 Kin. 4:7.

Exported. 1 Kin. 5:11. Ezek. 27:17¹⁷Judah, and the land of Israel, they were thy merchants: they traded in thy market wheat of Minnith, and Pannag, and honey, and oil, and balm. (Ezekiel 27:17). Hos. 12:1¹Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt. (Hosea 12:1).

Sold by measure. 1 Kin. 5:11. Luke 16:6⁶And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. (Luke 16:6).

Boxes. 2 Kin. 9:1.

Cruises. 1 Kin. 17:12.

Cellars. 1 Chron. 27:28²⁸And over the olive trees and the sycomore trees that were in the low plains was Baal-hanan the Gederite: and over the cellars of oil was Joash: (1 Chronicles 27:28).

Storehouses. 2 Chr. 32:28²⁸Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks. (2 Chronicles 32:28).

Stores of, laid up in fortified cities. 2 Chr. 11:11¹¹And he fortified the strong holds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and of oil and wine. (2 Chronicles 11:11).

Failure of, a severe calamity. Hag. 1:11¹¹And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands. (Haggai 1:11).

Miraculous increase of. 2 Kin. 4:2-6.

ILLUSTRATIVE OF

The unction of the Holy Spirit. Psa. 45:7⁷Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. (Psalm 45:7). Psa. 89:20²⁰I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: (Psalm 89:20). Zech. 4:12¹²And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? (Zechariah 4:12).

The consolation of the gospel. Isa. 61:3³To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. (Isaiah 61:3).

Kind reproof. Psa. 141:5⁵Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities. (Psalm 141:5).
