Often grew wild. Rom. 11:17¹⁷And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; (Romans 11:17).

CULTIVATED

In olive yards. 1 Sam. 8:14¹⁴And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. (1 Samuel 8:14). Neh. 5:11¹¹Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them. (Nehemiah 5:11).

Among rocks. Deut. 32:13¹³He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock; (Deuteronomy 32:13).

On the sides of mountains. Matt. 21:1¹And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, (Matthew 21:1).

Canaan abounded in. Deut. 6:11¹¹And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; (Deuteronomy 6:11). Deu. 6:11. Deu. 8:8. (marg.)

Assyria abounded in. 2 Kin. 18:32.

Kings of Israel largely cultivated. 1 Chron. 27:28²⁸And over the olive trees and the sycomore trees that were in the low plains was Baal-hanan the Gederite: and over the cellars of oil was Joash: (1 Chronicles 27:28).

DESCRIBED AS

Green. Jer. 11:16¹⁶The Lord called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken. (Jeremiah 11:16).

Fair and beautiful. (Jeremiah 11:16), with Hos. 14:6⁶His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon. (Hosea 14:6).

Fat and unctuous. Judg. 9:9⁹But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? (Judges 9:9). Rom. 11:17¹⁷And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; (Romans 11:17).

Bearing goodly fruit. Jer. 11:16¹⁶The Lord called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken. (Jeremiah 11:16), with James 3:12¹²Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. (James 3:12).

Grafting of, alluded to. Rom. 11:24²⁴For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree? (Romans 11:24).

Pruning of, alluded to. Rom. 11:18, 19¹⁸Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. ¹⁹Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. (Romans 11:18‑19).

Often cast its flowers. Job 15:33³³He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. (Job 15:33).

Often cast its fruit. Deut. 28:40⁴⁰Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy coasts, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olive shall cast his fruit. (Deuteronomy 28:40).

Often suffered from caterpillars. Amos 4:9⁹I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord. (Amos 4:9).

Good for the service of God and man. Judg. 9:9⁹But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? (Judges 9:9).

Oil procured from. Ex. 27:20²⁰And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always. (Exodus 27:20). Deut. 8:8⁸A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey; (Deuteronomy 8:8).

USED FOR MAKING

The cherubim in the temple. 1 Kin. 6:23.

The doors and posts of the temple. 1 Kin. 6:31-33.

Booths at feast of tabernacles. Neh. 8:15¹⁵And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written. (Nehemiah 8:15).

Beaten to remove the fruit. Deut. 24:20²⁰When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. (Deuteronomy 24:20).

Shaken when fully ripe. Isa. 17:6⁶Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the Lord God of Israel. (Isaiah 17:6).

Gleaning of, left for the poor. Deut. 24:20²⁰When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. (Deuteronomy 24:20).

Fruit of, during sabbatical year left for the poor, &c. Ex. 23:11¹¹But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. (Exodus 23:11).

The fruit of, trodden in presses to extract the oil. Mic. 6:15¹⁵Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine. (Micah 6:15), with Hag. 2:16¹⁶Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty. (Haggai 2:16),

Failure of, a great calamity. Hab. 3:17, 18¹⁷Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: ¹⁸Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. (Habakkuk 3:17‑18).

Of the Jewish church. Jer. 11:16¹⁶The Lord called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken. (Jeremiah 11:16).

Of the righteous. Psa. 52:8⁸But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. (Psalm 52:8). Hos. 14:6⁶His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon. (Hosea 14:6).

Of children of pious parents. Psa. 128:3³Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. (Psalm 128:3).

Of the two witnesses. Rev. 11:3, 4³And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. ⁴These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. (Revelation 11:3‑4).

(Gleaning of,) of the remnant of grace. Isa. 17:6⁶Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the Lord God of Israel. (Isaiah 17:6). Isa. 24:13¹³When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done. (Isaiah 24:13).

Probable origin of its being the emblem of peace. Gen. 8:11¹¹And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf plucked off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. (Genesis 8:11).
