ONE sweet yet solemn thought
Comes to me o'er and o'er, -
I 'm nearer home to-day
Than e'er I've been before.
Nearer my Father's house,
Where many Mansions be;
Nearer my Father's throne;
Nearer the crystal sea.
Nearer the verge of life
Where burdens are laid down;
Nearer leaving the cross;
Nearer wearing the crown.
But lying dark between -
Winding down through the night, -
Is a dim unknown stream
That leads at length to Light.
Saviour! perfect my soul!
Strengthen the pow'r of faith!
Let me feel Thee near when I stand
On the rocky shore of death,-..
Feel Thee near when my feet
Are slipping over the brink,
For it may be I 'm nearer home, -
Nearer now than I think.
