Salutations.

Antiquity of. Gen. 18:2²And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, (Genesis 18:2). Gen. 19:1¹And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; (Genesis 19:1).

WERE GIVEN

By brethren to each other. 1 Sam. 17:22²²And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren. (1 Samuel 17:22).

By inferiors to their superiors. Gen. 47:7⁷And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. (Genesis 47:7).

By superiors to inferiors. 1 Sam. 30:21²¹And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he saluted them. (1 Samuel 30:21).

By all passers-by. 1 Sam. 10:3, 4³Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine: ⁴And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands. (1 Samuel 10:3‑4). Psa. 129:8⁸Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the Lord be upon you: we bless you in the name of the Lord. (Psalm 129:8).

On entering a house. Judg. 18:15¹⁵And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him. (Judges 18:15). Matt. 10:12¹²And when ye come into an house, salute it. (Matthew 10:12). Luke 1:40, 41, 44⁴⁰And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. ⁴¹And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: (Luke 1:40‑41)
⁴⁴For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. (Luke 1:44).

Often sent through messengers. 1 Sam. 25:5, 14⁵And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name: (1 Samuel 25:5)
¹⁴But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed on them. (1 Samuel 25:14). 2 Sam. 8:10¹⁰Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass: (2 Samuel 8:10).

Often sent by letter. Rom. 16:21-23²¹Timotheus my workfellow, and Lucius, and Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsmen, salute you. ²²I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord. ²³Gaius mine host, and of the whole church, saluteth you. Erastus the chamberlain of the city saluteth you, and Quartus a brother. (Romans 16:21‑23). 1 Cor. 16:21²¹The salutation of me Paul with mine own hand. (1 Corinthians 16:21). Col. 4:18¹⁸The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen. <<Written from Rome to Colossians by Tychicus and Onesimus.>> (Colossians 4:18). 2 Thess. 3:17¹⁷The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write. (2 Thessalonians 3:17).

Denied to persons of bad character. 2 John. 10 v.

Persons in haste excused from giving or receiving. 2 Kin. 4:29. Luke 10:24²⁴For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. (Luke 10:24).

EXPRESSIONS USED AS;

Peace be with thee. Judg. 19:20²⁰And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. (Judges 19:20).

Peace to thee, and peace to thine house, and peace unto all that thou halt. 1 Sam. 25:6⁶And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast. (1 Samuel 25:6).

Peace be to this house. Luke 10:5⁵And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. (Luke 10:5).

The Lord be with you. Ruth 2:4⁴And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The Lord be with you. And they answered him, The Lord bless thee. (Ruth 2:4).

The blessing of the Lord be upon you, we bless you in the name of the Lord. Psa. 129:8⁸Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the Lord be upon you: we bless you in the name of the Lord. (Psalm 129:8).

Blessed be thou of the Lord. 1 Sam. 15:13¹³And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the Lord: I have performed the commandment of the Lord. (1 Samuel 15:13).

God be gracious unto thee. Gen. 43:29²⁹And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son. (Genesis 43:29).

Art thou in health? 2 Sam. 20:9⁹And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. (2 Samuel 20:9).

Hail. Matt. 26:49⁴⁹And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. (Matthew 26:49). Luke 1:28²⁸And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. (Luke 1:28).

All hail. Matt. 28:9⁹And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. (Matthew 28:9).

Often perfidious. 2 Sam. 20:9⁹And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. (2 Samuel 20:9). Matt. 26:49⁴⁹And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. (Matthew 26:49).

Given to Christ in derision. Matt. 27:29²⁹And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! (Matthew 27:29), with Mar. 15:18.

OFTEN ACCOMPANIED BY

Falling on the neck and kissing. Gen. 33:4⁴And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept. (Genesis 33:4). Gen. 45:14,15¹⁴And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. ¹⁵Moreover he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him. (Genesis 45:14‑15). Luke 15:20²⁰And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. (Luke 15:20).

Laying hold of the beard with the right hand, &c. 2 Sam. 20:9⁹And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. (2 Samuel 20:9).

Bowing frequently to the ground. Gen. 33:3³And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. (Genesis 33:3).

Embracing and kissing the feet. Matt. 28:9⁹And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. (Matthew 28:9). Luke 7:38³⁸And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. (Luke 7:38), garment.

Mat. the hem of the garment. Matt. 14:36³⁶And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole. (Matthew 14:36).

Falling prostrate on the ground. Esther 8:3³And Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews. (Esther 8:3). Matt. 2:11¹¹And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:11). Luke 8:41⁴¹And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house: (Luke 8:41).

Kissing the dust. Psa. 72:9⁹They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust. (Psalm 72:9). Isa. 49:23²³And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me. (Isaiah 49:23).

The Jews condemned for giving, only to their own countrymen. Matt. 5:47⁴⁷And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? (Matthew 5:47).

The Pharisees condemned for seeking, in public. Matt. 23:7⁷And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. (Matthew 23:7). Mar. 12:38.
