(little mark). Much used by ancients to authenticate documents and secure packages and doors, the impression being made in clay or wax. Seals were frequently engraved stones set in rings (Gen. 41:42⁴²And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; (Genesis 41:42); Job 38:14¹⁴It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment. (Job 38:14); Jer. 32:10¹⁰And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances. (Jeremiah 32:10); Matt. 27:66⁶⁶So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. (Matthew 27:66)).
