Christ set an example of. Matt. 11:25²⁵At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. (Matthew 11:25). Matt. 26:27²⁷And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; (Matthew 26:27). John 6:11¹¹And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. (John 6:11). John 11:41⁴¹Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. (John 11:41).

The heavenly host engaged in. Rev. 4:9⁹And when those beasts give glory and honor and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, (Revelation 4:9). Rev. 7:11, 12¹¹And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, ¹²Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. (Revelation 7:11‑12). Rev. 11:16, 17¹⁶And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, ¹⁷Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. (Revelation 11:16‑17).

Commanded. Psa. 50:14¹⁴Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: (Psalm 50:14). Phi. 4:6.

Is a good thing. Psa. 92:1¹<<A Psalm or Song for the sabbath day.>> It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: (Psalm 92:1).

SHOULD BE OFFERED

To God. Psa. 50:14¹⁴Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: (Psalm 50:14).

To Christ. 1 Tim. 1:12¹²And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; (1 Timothy 1:12).

Through Christ. Rom. 1:8⁸First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. (Romans 1:8). Col. 3:17¹⁷And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (Colossians 3:17). Heb. 13:15¹⁵By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. (Hebrews 13:15).

In the name of Christ. Eph. 5:20²⁰Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; (Ephesians 5:20).

In behalf of ministers. 2 Cor. 1:11¹¹Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf. (2 Corinthians 1:11).

In private worship. Dan. 6:10¹⁰Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. (Daniel 6:10).

In public worship. Psa. 35:18¹⁸I will give thee thanks in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people. (Psalm 35:18).

In everything. 1 The. 5:18.

Upon the completion of great undertakings. Neh. 12:31, 40³¹Then I brought up the princes of Judah upon the wall, and appointed two great companies of them that gave thanks, whereof one went on the right hand upon the wall toward the dung gate: (Nehemiah 12:31)
⁴⁰So stood the two companies of them that gave thanks in the house of God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me: (Nehemiah 12:40).

Before taking food. John 6:11¹¹And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. (John 6:11). Acts 27:35³⁵And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. (Acts 27:35).

Always. Eph. 1:16¹⁶Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; (Ephesians 1:16). Eph. 5:20²⁰Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; (Ephesians 5:20). 1 Thess. 1:2²We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; (1 Thessalonians 1:2).

At the remembrance of God's holiness. Psa. 30:4⁴Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. (Psalm 30:4). Psa. 97:12¹²Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. (Psalm 97:12).

For the goodness and mercy of God. Psa. 106:1¹Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. (Psalm 106:1). Psa. 107:1¹O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. (Psalm 107:1). Psa. 136:1-3¹O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. ²O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. ³O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever. (Psalm 136:1‑3).

For the gift of Christ. 2 Cor. 9:15¹⁵Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. (2 Corinthians 9:15).

For Christ's power and reign, Rev. 11:17¹⁷Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. (Revelation 11:17).

For the reception and effectual working of the word of God others. 1 Thess. 2:13¹³For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. (1 Thessalonians 2:13).

For deliverance through Christ from in-dwelling sin. Rom. 7:23-25²³But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. ²⁴O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? ²⁵I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. (Romans 7:23‑25).

For victory over death and the grave. 1 Cor. 15:57⁵⁷But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57).

For wisdom and might. Dan. 2:23²³I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter. (Daniel 2:23).

For the triumph of the gospel. 2 Cor. 2:14¹⁴Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savor of his knowledge by us in every place. (2 Corinthians 2:14).

For the conversion of others. Rom. 6:17¹⁷But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. (Romans 6:17).

For faith exhibited by others. Rom. 1:8⁸First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. (Romans 1:8). 2 Thess. 1:3³We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; (2 Thessalonians 1:3).

For love exhibited by others. 2 The. 1:3.

For the grace bestowed on others. 1 Cor. 1:4⁴I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; (1 Corinthians 1:4). Phi. 1:3-5. Col. 1:3-6³We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, ⁴Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, ⁵For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; ⁶Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: (Colossians 1:3‑6).

For the zeal exhibited by others. 2 Cor. 8:16¹⁶But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you. (2 Corinthians 8:16).

For the nearness of God's presence. Psa. 75:1¹<<To the chief Musician, Al-taschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph.>> Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare. (Psalm 75:1).

For appointment to the ministry. 1 Tim. 1:12¹²And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; (1 Timothy 1:12).

For willingness to offer our property for God's service. 1 Chron. 29:6-14⁶Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king's work, offered willingly, ⁷And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. ⁸And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the Lord, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. ⁹Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy. ¹⁰Wherefore David blessed the Lord before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel our father, for ever and ever. ¹¹Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all. ¹²Both riches and honor come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. ¹³Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name. ¹⁴But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee. (1 Chronicles 29:6‑14).

For the supply of our bodily wants. Rom. 14:6, 7⁶He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. ⁷For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. (Romans 14:6‑7). 1 Tim. 4:3, 4³Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. ⁴For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: (1 Timothy 4:3‑4).

For all men. 1 Tim. 2:1¹I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; (1 Timothy 2:1).

For all things. 2 Cor. 9:11¹¹Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. (2 Corinthians 9:11). Eph. 5:20²⁰Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; (Ephesians 5:20).

Should be accompanied by intercession for others. 1 Tim. 2:1¹I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; (1 Timothy 2:1). 2 Tim. 1:3³I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; (2 Timothy 1:3). Phile. 4.

Should always accompany prayer. Neh. 11:17¹⁷And Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, was the principal to begin the thanksgiving in prayer: and Bakbukiah the second among his brethren, and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun. (Nehemiah 11:17). Phi. 4:6. Col. 4:2²Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; (Colossians 4:2).

Ministers appointed to offer, in public. 1 Chron. 16:4, 7⁴And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, and to record, and to thank and praise the Lord God of Israel: (1 Chronicles 16:4)
⁷Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the Lord into the hand of Asaph and his brethren. (1 Chronicles 16:7). 1 Chron. 23:30³⁰And to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord, and likewise at even; (1 Chronicles 23:30). 2 Chr. 31:2²And Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man according to his service, the priests and Levites for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, and to give thanks, and to praise in the gates of the tents of the Lord. (2 Chronicles 31:2).

SAINTS

Exhorted to. Psa. 105:1¹O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. (Psalm 105:1). Col. 3:15¹⁵And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. (Colossians 3:15).

Resolved to offer. Psa. 18:49⁴⁹Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name. (Psalm 18:49). Psa. 30:12¹²To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever. (Psalm 30:12).

Habitually offer. Dan. 6:10¹⁰Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. (Daniel 6:10).

Offer sacrifices of. Psa. 116:17¹⁷I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord. (Psalm 116:17).

Abound in the faith with. Col. 2:7⁷Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. (Colossians 2:7).

Magnify God by. Psa. 69:30³⁰I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. (Psalm 69:30).

Come before God with. Psa. 95:2²Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. (Psalm 95:2).

Should enter God's gate with. Psa. 100:4⁴Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. (Psalm 100:4).

Of hypocrites, full of boasting. Luke 18:11¹¹The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. (Luke 18:11).

The wicked averse to. Rom. 1:21²¹Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. (Romans 1:21).

Exemplified. David, 1 Chron. 29:13¹³Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name. (1 Chronicles 29:13). Levites, 2 Chr. 5:12, 13¹²Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets:) ¹³It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord; (2 Chronicles 5:12‑13). Daniel, Dan. 2:33³³His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. (Daniel 2:33). Jonah, Jonah 2:9⁹But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord. (Jonah 2:9). Simeon, Luke 2:28²⁸Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, (Luke 2:28), Anna, Luke 2:38³⁸And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. (Luke 2:38). Paul, Acts 28:15¹⁵And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage. (Acts 28:15).
