Man is a sinner. God is a Holy God. He will by no means clear the guilty (Ex. 34:77Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. (Exodus 34:7)). Divine righteousness at all costs must be maintained. But what does this involve? We know full well that the sentence passed by God upon the sinner is DEATH (Rom. 6:2323For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)). And does death end all? No, infinitely solemn are the words of Scripture:—"It is appointed unto men once to die, but AFTER THIS the judgment." (Heb. 9:2727And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27)).
We repeat, there is no evading this question of all questions, How can a Holy God offer salvation to guilty sinners unless His righteousness be fully maintained?
