The Promises of God. 2 Corinthians 7:1; 2 Pet. 1:4

Contained in the Scriptures. Rom. 1:2²(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) (Romans 1:2).

Made in Christ. Eph. 3:6⁶That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: (Ephesians 3:6). 2 Tim. 1:1¹Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, (2 Timothy 1:1).

Christ. Gal. 3:16, 19¹⁶Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. (Galatians 3:16)
¹⁹Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. (Galatians 3:19).

Abraham. Gen. 12:3, 7³And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (Genesis 12:3)
⁷And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him. (Genesis 12:7). with Gal. 3:16¹⁶Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. (Galatians 3:16).

Isaac. Gen. 26:3, 4³Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; ⁴And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; (Genesis 26:3‑4).

Jacob. Gen. 28:14¹⁴And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. (Genesis 28:14).

David. 2 Sam. 7:12¹²And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. (2 Samuel 7:12). Psa. 89:3, 4, 35, 36³I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, ⁴Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah. (Psalm 89:3‑4)
³⁵Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. ³⁶His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. (Psalm 89:35‑36).

The Israelites. Rom. 9:4⁴Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; (Romans 9:4).

The Fathers. Acts 13:32³²And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, (Acts 13:32). Acts 26:6, 7⁶And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: ⁷Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. (Acts 26:6‑7).

All who are called of God. Acts 2:39³⁹For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. (Acts 2:39).

Those who love Him. James 1:12¹²Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (James 1:12). James 2:5⁵Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? (James 2:5).

Confirmed by an oath. Psa. 89:3, 4³I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, ⁴Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah. (Psalm 89:3‑4). Heb. 6:17¹⁷Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: (Hebrews 6:17).

The covenant established upon. Heb. 8:6⁶But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. (Hebrews 8:6).

God is faithful to. Titus 1:2²In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; (Titus 1:2). Heb. 10:23²³Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) (Hebrews 10:23).

God remembers. Psa. 105:42⁴²For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant. (Psalm 105:42). Luke 1:54, 55⁵⁴He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; ⁵⁵As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. (Luke 1:54‑55).

ARE

Good. 1 Kin. 8:56.

Holy. Psa. 105:42⁴²For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant. (Psalm 105:42).

Exceeding great and precious. 2 Peter 1:4⁴Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (2 Peter 1:4).

Confirmed in Christ. Rom. 15:8⁸Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: (Romans 15:8).

Yea and amen in Christ. 2 Cor. 1:20²⁰For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Fulfilled in Christ. 2 Sam. 7:12¹²And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. (2 Samuel 7:12), with Acts 13:23²³Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: (Acts 13:23). Luke 1:69-73⁶⁹And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; ⁷⁰As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: ⁷¹That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; ⁷²To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; ⁷³The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, (Luke 1:69‑73).

Through the righteousness of faith. Rom. 4:13,16¹³For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. (Romans 4:13)
¹⁶Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (Romans 4:16).

Obtained through faith. Heb. 11:33³³Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, (Hebrews 11:33).

Given to those who believe. Gal. 3:22²²But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. (Galatians 3:22).

Inherited through faith and patience. Heb. 6:12, 15¹²That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (Hebrews 6:12)
¹⁵And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. (Hebrews 6:15). Heb. 10:36³⁶For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. (Hebrews 10:36).

Performed in due season. Jer. 33:14¹⁴Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. (Jeremiah 33:14). Acts 7:17¹⁷But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt, (Acts 7:17). Gal. 4:4⁴But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, (Galatians 4:4).

Not one shall fail. Josh. 23:14¹⁴And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof. (Joshua 23:14). 1 Kin. 8:56.

The law not against. Gal. 3:21²¹Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. (Galatians 3:21).

The law could not disannul. Gal. 3:17¹⁷And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. (Galatians 3:17).

Christ. 2 Sam. 7:12,13¹²And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹³He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. (2 Samuel 7:12‑13), with Acts 13:22, 23²²And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. ²³Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: (Acts 13:22‑23).

The Holy Ghost. Acts 2:33³³Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. (Acts 2:33). Eph. 1:13¹³In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, (Ephesians 1:13).

The gospel. Rom. 1:1, 2¹Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, ²(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) (Romans 1:1‑2).

Life in Christ. 2 Tim. 1:1¹Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, (2 Timothy 1:1).

A crown of life. James 1:12¹²Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (James 1:12). Eternal life. Titus 1:2²In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; (Titus 1:2). 1 John. 2: 2.

The life that now is. 1 Tim. 4:8⁸For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. (1 Timothy 4:8).

Adoption. 2 Cor. 6:18¹⁸And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. (2 Corinthians 6:18), with 2 Cor. 7:1¹Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. (2 Corinthians 7:1).

Preservation in affliction. Isa. 43:2²When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. (Isaiah 43:2).

Blessing. Deut. 1:11¹¹(The Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!) (Deuteronomy 1:11).

Forgiveness of sins. Isa. 1:18¹⁸Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (Isaiah 1:18). Heb. 8:12¹²For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. (Hebrews 8:12).

Putting the law into the heart.

Jer. 31:33³³But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. (Jeremiah 31:33), with Heb. 8:10¹⁰For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: (Hebrews 8:10).

Second coming of Christ. 2 Pet. 3:4⁴And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. (2 Peter 3:4).

New heavens and earth. 2 Peter 3:13¹³Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (2 Peter 3:13).

Entering into rest. Josh. 22:4⁴And now the Lord your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side Jordan. (Joshua 22:4), with Heb. 4:1¹Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. (Hebrews 4:1).

Should lead to perfecting holiness. 2 Cor. 7:1¹Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. (2 Corinthians 7:1).

The inheritance of the saints is of. Rom. 4:13¹³For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. (Romans 4:13). Gal. 3:18¹⁸For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. (Galatians 3:18).

SAINTS

Children of. Rom. 9:8⁸That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. (Romans 9:8). Gal. 4:28²⁸Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. (Galatians 4:28).

Heirs of. Gal. 3:29²⁹And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:29). Heb. 6:17¹⁷Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: (Hebrews 6:17). Heb. 11:9⁹By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: (Hebrews 11:9).

Stagger not at. Rom. 4:20²⁰He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; (Romans 4:20).

Have implicit confidence in. Heb. 11:11¹¹Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. (Hebrews 11:11).

Expect the performance of. Luke 1:38, 45³⁸And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. (Luke 1:38)
⁴⁵And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. (Luke 1:45). 2 Peter 3:13¹³Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (2 Peter 3:13).

Sometimes, through infirmity, tempted to doubt. Psa. 77:8, 10⁸Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore? (Psalm 77:8)
¹⁰And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High. (Psalm 77:10).

Plead, in prayer. Gen. 32:9,12⁹And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee: (Genesis 32:9)
¹²And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. (Genesis 32:12). 1 Chron. 17:23, 26²³Therefore now, Lord, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said. (1 Chronicles 17:23)
²⁶And now, Lord, thou art God, and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant: (1 Chronicles 17:26). Isa. 43:26²⁶Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified. (Isaiah 43:26).

Should wait for the performance of. Acts 1:4⁴And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. (Acts 1:4).

Gentiles shall be partakers of. Eph. 3:6⁶That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: (Ephesians 3:6).

Man, by nature, has no interest in. Eph. 2:12¹²That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: (Ephesians 2:12).

Scoffers despise. 2 Peter 3:3, 4³Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, ⁴And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. (2 Peter 3:3‑4).

Fear, lest ye come short of. Heb. 4:1¹Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. (Hebrews 4:1).
