The Silences of the Lord Jesus

When the Lord Jesus was before the high priest He was silent (Matt. 26:62, 6362And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? 63But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. (Matthew 26:62‑63)). Oh, those silences of Jesus! They are very solemn. He never was silent to a poor sinner; but to men like these who were going down to the pit, He was silent. The high priest was God's representative on the earth, and the Lord did not answer till asked if He were the Christ. He bore witness to the truth about His own blessed Person, and it cost Him His own blessed life. Then they spat in His face—the most contemptuous thing one can do to a fellow being. He was mocked by both Jews and Gentiles.
