Christ’s words to His disciples concerning the Holy Ghost in John 14; 15; 16 — “I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him; but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you and shall be in you.” “But the Comforter which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I have said unto you.” “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.” “It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart I will send him unto you. And when he is come he will reprove (convict R.V.) the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment.” “Howbeit when he the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth; for he shall not speak of himself: but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak; and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall show it unto you.”
Christ promised His disciples that when brought before the rulers, they should be taught by the Spirit what to say, Matthew 10:2020For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. (Matthew 10:20), &c.
The Spirit—
Was received by the following companies or individual saints: the whole company of disciples, Acts 2:44And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:4); The Samaritan believers, Acts 8:1717Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. (Acts 8:17); Saul (Paul), Acts 9:1717And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. (Acts 9:17); Cornelius and his friends, Acts 10:41-4741Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? (Acts 10:41‑47); The disciples who had been baptized with John’s baptism, Acts 19:22He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. (Acts 19:2).
The following are spoken of as being “filled with the Holy Ghost.” Peter, Acts 4:88Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, (Acts 4:8); Stephen, Chapter 6:5; 7:55; Barnabas, Chapter 11:21; Paul, Chapter 13:9; the disciples, Chapter 13:52.
The following are recorded as having been distinctly guided by the Spirit, Philip, Acts 8:2929Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. (Acts 8:29); Peter, chapter 10:19; 11:12; Barnabas and Saul chapter 13:4; and Paul and Silas, chapter 16:6, 7.
